Dotty and I will have a week off in February. Can you recommend a motel or lodge or cabin rental at the Washington or Oregon coast?. It has to be within a day's drive from Seattle. We would want to eat all meals out. We just want to sit, read, overlook and walk the seashore. Thanks.

its not the sea shore but we both like the La Connor lodge. its on the water right in la Connor. piano bar wine tasting in the evening and with in walking distance of many great restaurants. we spend our anniversary there every year.Take the boat up from Everett and tie to their dock. great rooms with a view, fireplace and romantic. Susan want to remodel our bedroom to match their decor.

Marty - there are lots of places around that would work and of course, you'll get off season rates everyplace. What are you looking to spend and how important is it that there are good/many restaurants around?

Hobuck beach resort in Neah Bay has some very nice cabins on the water and there will be PLENTY of solitude out there in Feb. However, you're choices of restaurants would be very limited (1 or two places max). Ocean Shores has a lot of places to rent but it's a bit more touristy - but there's lot's of choices for restaurants. Tofino is accessible in one LONG day - quaint, some very good restaurants, really beautiful scenery but probably pricier for accommodations.

Closer and also pricey (but very nice) is "Houseboats for 2" in Pleasant Harbor. My wife and I stayed there for our 15th anniversary (almost 15 years ago now) and really liked it. The houseboats have a fireplace, a jacuzzi, a minimal galley, a bed, a love seat and a few chairs on the deck. It's right in the marina.

I've also enjoyed Quinault Lodge - it's on Lake Quinault so it's not right on the coast but it is very nice. Another thing you might look into is renting a home through http://www.vacationrentals.com/ . I've done that before and there's a lot of options in both location and price range.

I enjoyed the Beach Haven Resort, out on Orcas. About as quiet as it gets, and as I recall it was pretty reasonably priced.

Hallmark Inn - Cannon Beach. Great ocean view, walking distance to several restaurants, shopping and plenty of beach for walking.

+1 - My family's been going there since it was called the Surf's View many years ago.

The Oceancrest resort in Moclips, Wa. Has rooms with a full view of the ocean. We've never stayed there but I've delivered groceries there and they have a nice restaurant also overlooking the ocean. It's up on a bluff so it really has a spectacular view. Pacific Beach and Seabrook are very close by. It's about a half hour drive to Ocean Shores. Hope that helps.

Marty,
It sounds like a really good idea. I hope you find the right place. Some champagne? Happy holidays! Always enjoyed your insights.

Almost forgot about the Collins Inn near the marina at Ocean Shores. Very nice view of the edge of the chehalis river system where it meets the ocean. Very nice people and great food. Close to town. Lots of dining choices other than the Inn.

Thanks everybody. Excellent suggestions, and we will consider them all. 2011 will be the year of our 50th anniversary so we may, well, go a little overboard next year. But, as someone said long ago in a far different context, "..if not now, when...?" Thanks again for your help.

Marty and Dotty

Marty,

Congratulations on the 50th year. That is quit an accomplishment. You two are a fine example. Sure hope you have a great year.

Marty and Deena-

Happy Golden Wedding Anniversary! :rose :rose :rose

That's quite an accomplishment for you two! :hug :hug2

Cathy and I will be there ourselves in just four short years! :wink

Why do the years seem to go by faster as we get older? :smileo

I second Hallmark Inn as well as others in Cannon Beach. It probably one of the nicer beach towns with good places to eat and nice shops and art galleries. Another great little town is Pacific Beach. We rented a house there and enjoyed watching the Dory's do their beach launches

I also like Pacific Beach, OR. Good spot to explore the OR coast in both directions but if it was me...I would head to Tofino Area in BC I'm so eager to explore that area. Have fun.

In anyone does decide to go to Tofino, I can highly recommend Crystal Cove Beach Resort. Joyce and I rented a cabin there for 5 days in June of this past year. It's very nice - we were in cabin #8 - hot tub on the deck and a beautiful view of the cove. We rode our bikes into and out of town (about 3 miles each way - mostly on trail or wide shoulder. They have some reasonable specials for the off season.

Cannon beach is nice, and lots of lodging options.

My favorite part of the Oregon coast is the central coast, and recently we've tried both Adobe Resort and Overleaf Lodge in Yachts (north of Florence). Both places are nice- can't beat the views and location to storm watch. Small town, but plenty of places to eat. Florence is to the South, and Newport to the North- both close enough to drive for a meal. Cute shops. Adobe Resort has a restaurant, Overleaf does not- but does have continental breakfast. Very relaxing to jsut sit and watch the ocean, go for walks, etc. It's like being in a different world. The Sea Lion Caves are nearby and can't be missed! Along with Heceta head light house- a short hike out to the lighthouse.

Also, if you want to splurge 1 night on the way down or the way back, stop in Astoria and stay at The Cannery Inn. It's right under the bridge, built out over the river, right on the edge of the shipping canal. They provide binoculars and it is so cool to see the cargo ships coming in over the Columbia bar and watch them come towards you and go right by you on your deck. Not cheap, but worth it for 1 night!

Marty,

Depot Bay, Oregon. "Channel House", Best storm watching perch on coast. Some with hot tub on the deck and fireplaces I think, (It has been a long time).
