A new motor sailor

No, it's not a C-Dory, but it sure has some similar styling...

A 2-cylinder diesel, inside and outside steering, a dinette, a galley, v-berth... for those who don't need to go fast and want to do some sailing, this looks like an interesting option.

One of the sailboats we owned previously was a Com-Pac... well-built, nice details, solid boats. This one is still in the development stage, but looks very interesting. I assume it will have a bottom similar to their current 23' trailerable sailboat.

Not sure what the market will be for a small motor sailor, but it could be an unfulfilled niche. Seems that more and more C-Dory owners are slowing down to run more efficiently, save fuel.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Jim,

I think the trailerable, motor sailing market is reasonably large. MacGregor sure sells of lot of their 26M and I even considered buying one. I love the speed that theirs obtains under power (almost 20MPH at top end). That kind of speed makes it practical as a power boat or even a fishing boat. It also allows one to quickly motor to a cruising area of interest prior unfurling the sails. There's also a ton of space inside a sailboat relative to a C-Dory. Unfortunately, the build quality on the MacGregor boats is pretty miserable. So, a well built motor sailing boat might be able to attract the more discerning buyer who's considering a MacGregor.

Jim,

Thanks for posting this. I think that this is an unexplored niche in the market and Com-Pac might be just the guys to pull it off. For a few years I admired the Gulf motorsailers, but their quality wasn't quite there.

That boat reminds me of some of the Nimble Motor Sailors that Ted Brewer designed back in the 70's. We owner the trawler version called a Nomad. It had a lot of room for a 25 footer. Powered it with a 50 HP Honda. 10 knots on a good day with a tail wind.

Roger,

We had a Mac 26X. No issues with the build quality, a lot of bang for the buck. Frankly, the Com-Pac build quality is first class, AND this new model has an inside steering station, something not available on the Mac. I see that as a real added appeal for folks who want to do some cruising in all types of weather (as we all know ).

It will be interesting to see what CP does with the interior on this boat and what the hull-form is.

I considered the Nimble Arctic/Kodiak before buying our C-Dory, but didn't care for the relatively flat bottom... on a sailboat. Wild Blue has met all our trailerable cruising needs, but I do occasionally miss sailing. Not enough to run out and buy another boat. Fortunately, I have sailing friends, and I can sail on their boats until that feeling passes. 8)

Cool Jim,

That thing looks related to a C-Dory. I too miss the sailing (sometimes), but I never wanted to climb a mast. Gotta be able to bring the top to me. ComPac will do a way better job than the Macgregor in construction quality. We nearly bought one (ComPac 19), but found a Montgomery instead. This will be a fun one to see going forward. They are looking at a niche market. Fisher downsizers, Nordhauven wannabe's.

My second sailboat was a Nimble Arctic pilothouse (predecessor to the Nimble Kodiak). A yawl rig with Honda 9.9 kicker.

Pam & I spent MANY days sailing her and MANY nights aboard. We agreed years ago that we slept better on that boat than we did in our own bed.

I love pilothouse sailboats. One of the reasons I purchased C-Gypsy was the cabin reminded me of the Nimble Arctic.

5 years ago I owned four boats. I whittled and advertised and whittled some more. Today I only have ONE boat.

Dang it! If Compac actually finishes this project I may be back to owning two boats...
