A new Lake Powell story

A group of 11 sea kayakers gathered at Bullfrog, Utah, Oct. 3 for a mellow trip, practically guaranteed by renting a houseboat. It began in an interesting way; the first day we were unable to leave the dock due to very high winds.

The weather cleared, we did some exploring, enjoyed lazy days etc. until noon on the 8th. We were at the end of an inlet, perhaps 50 some miles out. I fell hard on my leg while carrying a kayak across a sandy slope. The foot went the other direction that the leg did. Our entire group had to pack up and go back, unfortunately, leaving only a day and a half for the rest of their trip. We had no radio service for awhile. 7 hours later our group arrived at Bullfrog (Oh, what I would have done for a C-Dory hours earlier) to greet the NPS rangers with the emergency vehicle. But it is basically for the Park Area only, not beyond Bullfrog, so the ride was very short!
FYI, there is a small clinic there, very minimal services, but a great staff. No docs, no xrays, etc. No ambulance service will come to Bullfrog, no taxis, nothing but the $30,000. helicopter. Yes, that is the price.

I said no thanks. The medical staffer was very uncomfortable with the whole situation, and said I needed to get to a trauma center very soon.

It has all worked out. Tuesday Oct. 13th I finally had surgery in San Diego, and am staying with my son and his family. The surgery went better than expected given the mess of the ankle and foot. It is doubtful I will be putting weight on the foot much before the end of the year. I hope to see folks at the SBS if I am back home by then.

I am enjoying the photos of the C-Brat trip to Lake Powell now that I can get to the computer! Thanks for all of them! Perhaps I will join you next September on Lake Powell!

Whoa! Anne, that is quite the story. I sure hope you have gotten past how bad that had to hurt and are feeling better. Sorry, sorry, sorry to hear this.

Anne, so sorry to hear of your awful trip! It's rough being in backcountry when emergencies happen. Too bad there weren't any C-Dory's there. I'm glad you're back to civilization and patched up. Take it easy, now.

Anne, sorry to hear about your accident. When you lose your mobility, everything you do is tough (this from a guy who has gotten off hard from motorcycles a time or twelve, was king of the windmills when skiing, and has said, "How hard can that be?" way too often  ). One thing time has taught me: I really don't heal as fast as I used to.

Hope your healing is fast and complete.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Anne, Hope all goes good in your healing. Wow 30 grand huh? Could have had the whole state of Utah packed up and shipped to the hospital for that kind of scratch!

So sorry to hear about the slip. But glad you are healing well - sure a rough experience - we're all thinking of you and sending our best wishes for your recovery.

Wow - sorry to hear about that and glad to hear you are on the mend. Sounds like you made the right choice by not taking the $30,000 helo ride. Short of internal bleeding, bones through the skin or loss of circulation, most orthopedic "emergencies" are not really emergencies. They may hurt like heck but a delay in treatment is usually of little consequence in the overall outcome (of course my medical opinion is worth what you paid for it).

Get well soon and get back out on your boat!

You have to be more careful. I fell off a house last year about this time and messed up my ankle. I still dont like to run on it. hell I dont like to run anyway.

I have flown in my dads plane to that airport out from his house and there is little there except the marina. 3 hours plus to vegas and back with medical staff? $30k to a hospital sounds about right. I would have stuck my thumb out by the road but not many folks using that road this time of year.

See you when you get back.

Anne, What a bummer. So sorry to hear about your accident and the long recovery time. My best wishes to you for a speedy recovery and a quick trip back to Seattle.

Robbi

Anne, sorry to hear you had to go through such an ordeal. Hope you do well as possible through the recovery and get back to 100%. Its been close to 30 years since I broke and otherwise tore up my right ankle and still remember the experience enough to well sympathize with you now.

Does health insurance cover airlifts? Does it depend on the plan? Who would have paid for the evacuation if you had activated a PLB or SPOT? Just curious...

Sorry to hear about your injury and best of luck with the recovery. Being injured is no fun, but at least you have the winter to recover before next years boating season.

Hi Anne,

Sorry to hear about your injury! Just curious was it the same ankle you hurt at Stuart island when we were there this summer? Maybe it was not up to its full potential and thats what caused the fall.

Hope you heal fast.

You'd have to check with your insurance to see if they cover med-evac. When we RVed in Mexico, we bought Life-Flight insurance... they pay to fly you back and have someone drive your RV back. If you're in the US and have a life-threatening situation and activate a PLB or SPOT, the right authorities (not a commercial med-evac) come looking for you and evaluate the best way to handle your particular situation.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Anne,

What a story. Sure hope the healing is going well. Let's see, computer time now. Lots of time to keep the C-Brats posted on the So Cal goings on. Prayers for a quick and trouble free recovery, and looking forward to seeing you at the SBS CBGT where-ever.
