A Big Reason Not to Cruise the Inside Passage in the winter

Marine forecast for the east straits of Juan de Fuca tomorrow, 35 to 45 Knots, seas 8 to 12 feet, same for the San Juans. You got to love the NW.

Good call, Ron! But you are going to LOVE Ivory Island Light Station when the weather settles down...Sylvia is a GREAT hostess!

how do you get to be a light keeper. Me and susan are planning our post -james carrers. Top on the list is owning a marina, but light house keeper has to rate in the top ten. really what are the requirements for the job andwhee do I apply??

Well, Tom - it really helps to be Canadian, eh? Most (all?) of the US light stations are automated, no humans need apply...

'helps to be canadian" well after this election where half way there.

figures that automation beat me out of the job before I even considered applying for it. Maybe if I become a illegal worker they will be able to afford me. i promise to go home after the season ends.

Yeah, but I hope you weren't planning your initial explorations out in Juan de Fuca, the Strait of Georgia or Johnstone Strait, were you? Here is the forecast you want. Looks like the weekend should be better.

So, all in all, you're saying this would be a great time for a novice skipper to break in a new TomCat. Right?

Well, Pat, I was mainly joking... those big waters are not high on my list. We are used to high winds here, but the effects of rapid depth change, tides, and currents on top of the winds are being carefully weighed.

I got the Raymarine E-80, the navionics platinum chart, and the satellite weather, so I figure we can find windows thru about anything, unless 5 days of heavy fog descend upon us... But, then, there is always the ferry and dri dock storage on some island, I guess...

John

Also, Starcraft Tom, A friend of mine who loved fishing and boating, dreamed for years of of buying a marina and running it into retirement. He actually bought a marina there in downtown Branson, MO, and quit dentistry.

What he found was that running the marina, the store, etc., was a relentless, full time headache of a job. He went for months at a time with no window for fishing at all and had obnoxious ppl banging at his door all hours of the day and nite. It took him over a year to sell the thing at a big loss...

Vacation spots are wonderful BECAUSE you are away from the stress of everyday life, not because of some inherent karma of the place. He found that, once the responsibility and stress of everyday work came to his previously favorite marina getaway, the place was worse than living in Wichita, KS.

John

Dusty,
I guess you are one of a handful of people on this site who would have personally experienced 9 metre seas and hurricane force winds. Its probably exciting enough from the bridge of a warship. I can't begin to imagine what its like from a small sail/power vessel, even ones capable of handling it. Even 2 metre seas in Georgia Strait are more than I want to be out in with my 25. I think I'll join you in your choice of fireplace and rocker. May I just suggest we add a small tot of brandy to ensure proper appreciation of our choice?

I wouldn't have thought that possible.

Yeah, Queen Charlotte Sound was a pussycat back in mid-June! It was, however, the first time I had ever been in sea swells, which is a whole 'nother experience, even the "smaller" ones, compared to our little chop on the inland waters! It is hard to imagine what it must feel like to be out there in the current conditions - and I have NO inclination to find out!

Well that confirms it. My inside passage trip is definitely cancelled for this weekend. 9 metres is 30ft and that is at least a couple of feet past my comfort level. Its kind of amazing to think that a half dozen CD's made this passage this summer knowing that it can get this rough!
Check out this forecast!

We interrupt this thread to vigorously assert that any talk about pussycats or other two or four legged, furry critters, or even those that slither or hop, will forthwith be assigned to the ''Critter" thread over there on the other side.

Thank you for your cooperation. ~ Mgt.
