A Big Reason Not to Cruise the Inside Passage in the winter

Well, Jim, I actually live about an hour outside of Wichita on a farm with a clear, spring fed creek and lots of critters, trees, small riffles, falls, and to me it's idyllic. From the Wichita area you can get amost anywhere in 5-8 hours driving or flying.

We go to Boston, NY, Smoky Mountains, Richmond, Savannah, Panama City, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, the Gulf, lakes in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, to the SW to Tombstone, Frisco, desert and back up to the Black Hills, SD, then Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Glacier Park, and yes, Seattle, too. Even Chicago is just an overnite train ride from here! So many aircraft ppl from Chicago that several daily round trip flights are available. You can get on a plane at 6-7 am to Chicago and be back in Wichita by sunset in the spring and summer. Minneapolis is not much farther than Dallas. It's a one day drive to Canada, or the Gulf of Mexico and even Mexico itself.

Being centrally located allows us go almost anywhere easily. They just started a Wichita to New York flight at $99 ! The county where my farm is has more sunny days annually than anywhere in Florida. So, it does not hurt our feelings if thousands don't want to come and crowd up our hideaway while we can easily go anywhere when we want!

Now, John, be serious. You mean you wouldn't trade all that for the chance to spend three hours a day commuting in the Chicago area? I can't believe it.

And we can get anywhere in the country in a matter of just a few hours. Well, if you don't figure in the three hour hassle at O'Hare, that is.

Trust me, I do know that Kansas is a great place. My family settled in SE Kansas when they first emmigrated to the US in the 1930s. A little place called Camp 13, a strip mining area near Pittsburgh, now called Yale. Maybe you've heard of a restaurant named "Chicken Mary's" Mary was my aunt.

I'm surprised it took so long to get my slap down. I expected it much sooner. You must have been busy. :wink

Best regards,
Jim

Sorry about the knee jerk... I usually don't look at a computer on Fri Sat, or Sun due to the farm work and more earthy environs. I love to soak up the BS at the local coffee shops, CO-OPs. Just happens today I was in the office! I like that SE part and now those strip mines are like jungle fishing/camping sites with woods so thick you can hardly walk between the treetrunks. Small world!

Sorry I was away for a day or so . About the marina, yesterday I got up at 5am to drive 20 miles to work. that takes almost a hour, I get in a work truck and drive all day long from the plant ( concrete, ready mix) to the job sites in traffic for 9 hours, no lunch. then at the end of the day I find out the I have to drive from my last job in lynnwood to the other plant in redmond to get rid of the 4 extra yards i have, contractors cant do math, then back to millcreek. Thats is seattle friday traffic. 20 miles 3 hours later I get off work after 630pm and sit in traffic for another hour to get home all because some dam contractor can not do math in english or spanish. ..... I will take the head ach of a marina ,where my whole day is within 200 yrds of the house, anyday.

We meet a couple last year on thesits island. They own the marine in the back of the bay, but are from marysville where we live now. They got tried of the b.s. seattle commute and no time for family and just seeing each other for a hour before bed. They have been up in thesits for a few years and love it. They live right there on the property and run a small store, fuel and marina. The good thing for them is that they are small, always pre-booked and only open 8 months of the year. they spend 2 months a year in mexico every winter relaying.
