22' Cruiser VS 20' Maxxum

Just got back from a halibut trip with a guy that owns a 20' Maxxum aluminum hull boat. I'm not very familiar with the aluminum boats but he said that the Maxxum and North River are pretty much the same boat. I've never taken mine in the salt water but he was telling me that he would be very cautious in rough water because of how little it weighed. I'm just curious as to if anybody on here has any experience with the aluminum hull and if the 22' Cruiser would do just as good, worse, or even better than a 20' aluminum hull in rough water.

By the way, the fishing was great. Picked up a 43" & 45" Halibut out of Newport, OR.

Thanks,

apples and oranges. You are looking at two completely different hull forms. The building material does not matter very much to performance except for weight and your two boats are very close in weight.

His boat is going to ride faster and softer in the chop due to the amount of v in the hull. Your c Dory's is going to go slower and ride a little rougher in the chop but i think better in the big swells. You are going to burn less fuel.

As for going off shore. Lots of people do and its just a matter of weather and wave height. A 5 foot swell at 4 seconds is bad no matter if its 50 miles off shore or out in from of everett ( where I have been in it) and smooth water is smooth water. So just pick the weather and go.

Kevin-

The CD-22 is like a cork. It rides over the top of most everything, including all but a breaking wave. Even then, the enclosed cabin sheds most of the water, and what goes into the cockpit can be quickly pumped out by bilge pumps. The exception might be a breaking wave from behind, but there are virtually no incidents of this happening unless the stern of the boat was tied down by an anchor and facing into the wavefronts.

Your friends concern about the weight is unfounded, or more likely based on the performance of heavy displacement boats such as commercial fishing boats, and doesn't apply to our tough little C-Dory's.

Joe,

Thanks for the info. If for some reason I don't sell it I think I need to start making frequent trips to the coast.

Albacore? Halibut? Salmon?

Lots of good reasons to go!
