2011 marine-relevant calendar?

Last year my house calendars were from a trawler group and from Anacortes Yacht Charter. Neither has calendars this year. Can anyone suggest some cool (preferably free, preferably PNW) calendars with great boating photos? Something near 8.5x11 on top and bottom pages would be about right.

I thought about getting the 2011 edition of this one but I don't think the Admiral would approve. :(

Has anyone ever put together a C-Dory calendar? I know a Boston Whaler calendar has been offered in years past. Owners submitted pictures to a forum user and he chose the best ones and put them together as a calendar and then offered them for sale online through one of the print on demand websites. As I recall each calendar cost about $20.

It might be too late for this to happen this year, but I think it could turn out well and be a cool thing to put together in the future. If there is interest (and photos) for a calendar this year, I'd be willing to try and put something together in the next few weeks.

I have been doing a C-Dory calender for family and friends for the last 3 years. It is done by a print shop here in Sequim, but I got behind this year due to some computer trouble and didn't get it done before the end of the year. It is fun, and good advertising.

That is how the 2010 trawler calendar I have happened. The trawler-owner gal who did it owns a quick-print shop.

Sounds like you and Harvey should put your heads together. I bet Jim would have some cool pix to share. I would definitely pay $20 for something like that.

Print On Demand has changed the publishing business. While the cost per unit is definitely higher at the retail side, no one has to take the BIG risk of printing up 10,000+ units without guaranteed sales. The downside: not much profit to be made, so less interest in this as a commercial venture.

The real rub: see Warren's first post on this thread and the mention of "preferably free." Who in the boating industry these days has deep enough pockets to produce (time ain't cheap) a calender, pay something to the photographers for the use of their (great) images, do the layout, pay the printing costs (also not cheap)... so they can hand out a FREE :?: calendar?

I once produced a gorgeous custom Christmas card for a boat manufacturer that they could send to owners, potential buyers, and vendors. i was able to get their cost down to about $1.50 each for a couple thousand.

I have no doubt that there would be a handful of people here who would pay $20 for a gorgeous C-Dory calendar. Most wouldn't. If one were to pick 13 great images for a calender, there would certainly be at least 13 sales. Having done calenders in the past, I know how much work is involved in the production. i see this topic come up on various forums (boat, RV, motorcycle, etc, etc) this time of year. Even if one can come up with the (great) images, there is then the concern of "how to market" - does the forum allow sales of such items?

Having said all that, IF Bill and Mike were to approve of a project like this to be promoted ON this forum, I would be willing to ramrod the production (I know how many manhours this will really take). Proceeds to go to the forum. No one gets a freebie. Make it POD and that would take care of any shipping and handling work.

Of course, it would have been better to have done the pre-production work several months ago, but it could be set up to be an 18 month calender, starting next July. Damn, the more I write here, the more concern about shooting myself in the foot. Heck, this was Warren's idea... maybe HE wants to do all this work so he can pay $20 for a free calender? These days, I'm a trophy husband, author, and occasional tour boat captain... not sure I'm looking for another job.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Jim, Definitely, the times are different and I am not surprised that no or few free calendars are available. Even the non-profits like Kiwanis have no calendar for sale this year. So, if no free calendars, then I am willing to pay, but I have found no calendars with subject matter that moves me.

A C-Dory calendar would be great, but I am over-extended with other projects.

Well, you did mention one in your first post. 8)

Thanks for the thoughts Jim. If we do a calendar I think it would have to be a non-profit deal for everyone in order for the final price to be reasonable. I've got lots of time in the next couple weeks (recovering from back surgery) and I could certainly try to put something together for this year if people are interested. However, I'd need to get some pictures from other brats. If someone else wants to tackle making a calendar, that's fine too!

Given that it's already December 30th, it's awfully late to start thinking about this. Perhaps there's interest in putting something together in the future, though. Maybe a C-Dory themed photo contest (how to judge???), with the 13 best making it into a calendar?

I'd be fine with a calendar that went from say 3/2011 to 2/2012. Better yet - thinking out of the box - do an 18 month version and charge a bit more.

I like the idea of submitting photos for a best of contest. Photos would have to be of a c-dory or c-dory event. Iam sure the powers that be could set up a poll. I have not idea how hard that is or is not and I dont want to find out.

The contest winners could be put on the calendar, and the rest, or many of them at least, used to renew the photos that are now used in rotation on the Home Page, which are getting a bit stale.

I'd be all in favor of you doing the calender. As far as a "judging", it would be more cohesive to have one person do the selecting. And then the next hurdle: making all those images from different photographers look good together; decide on a format - size, file type/jpg or tif, color space, RGB or CMYK. Authorization from the photographers to "tweak" an image as necessary.

Pulling files from the photo forum here would not work, since most are sized too small for 8.5x11 reproduction. It will take time to receive, sort, and select images to get a good representation.

Before retiring, I was an internationally affiliated photographic juror for professional photography competitions. I am not saying that to imply any expert status, just want to tell about potential judging problems (I had to attend a school to learn proper judging techniques). I had a friend get downright upset with me because his image did not score well at a regional competition where I was one of the judges. Judging photography is a subjective effort, even with training. Culling images for a particular project isn't the same thing as "picking the best." Just so no one gets their nose out of joint if their favorite image isn't selected. It was always interesting to see the images on display later; sometimes, there was a "Peoples' Choice" award that didn't necessarily score well with the trained judges.

Good luck with this project if it goes forward. Most folks really like to see their image in print, so I would assume you would get decent participation.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Sorry, all - missed this thread. Sam (20dauntless) brought it to my attention.

No problemo promoting this calendar or any other C-Brat/C-Dory items here - as long as no profit is made. That doesn't necessarily mean free - just that actual costs are all that should be recovered. This is understood by Sam, so have at it!

In fact, when done - perhaps I can find somewhere on the front page to promote it for a bit. The Tip Jar could use a vacation...we could spare that spot for a month or so.

Sam also asked about use of the C-Brats logo - again, no problemo. Below are several samples of what we have available.

With Bill's blessing (thanks!) we can go ahead with this project. The first challenge is getting pictures together. I'm open to suggestions on the best way to do this, but perhaps having people email pictures in is best. If that is the case, feel free to start sending them to samlandsman at gmail dot com.

Just to clarify, photographers will not receive any money for their pictures and neither will I. I may tweak photos slightly (color correction, minor cropping to fit the layout, etc.), but I won't do anything major without prior permission. If you send a picture in, please include your first and last names and C-Brat username as well as the location of the photo.

To see an idea of what I'm thinking, I created a quick example:

Calendar_Example.jpg

Keep in mind that I probably will make changes to this and a color band behind the text and logo (that goes all the way across) may be used so the text doesn't get lost in the picture.

Let me know what you think.

My daughter who is a great photographer, put together a custom calendar on the website picaboo.com . Cost about $20 each in quantities of 1, probably less for more, haven't checked.

Check it out. I would think that starting to work on this now for 2012 would be the way to go, by the time we get pictures chosen and all the details worked out, it'd be halfway through 2011!

Perhaps, rather than trying to chose a type or style, those that wanted to do it could submit a sample to Tyboo or DaNag who would chose the "best" or appoint a committee to do just that. Then we could take orders and print for delivery prior to Christmas 2011.

With the burgee debacle in mind, this might be the least painful way to do it. There are plenty of pictures in the albums to choose from. There is room on each calendar page for a feature picture and at least three small ones, at least in the Picaboo version.

JMHO.

Happy New Year!!

Charlie, I agree that it's late to be starting on this for this year. And I like the idea of having multiple people submit designs for the calendar.

Here's what I'll do...If I get enough photos emailed to me in the next few days, I'll put a calendar together with what I've got. I'll use a print on demand company with a store function (not sure which yet) so that I don't have to deal with processing payments, shipping, or ordering a bunch of stock. If people like the finished calendar they can order it, if not there's no loss to me or anyone else. If there is still interest, we can work up a more formal solution to creating a calendar for next year too.

So, for anyone who is interested, email me (samlandsman at gmail dot com) your best C-Dory pictures. High resolution (probably 1600 x 1200 or so, the more the better) photos are absolutely necessary due to the print size.

Once I have the photos it won't take me long to put together the calendar, so the sooner you can email pictures the better.

Let me know of any comments/questions/concerns.

Sam
