2002 Transom cap.

Hi everyone,

I have a 2002 22ft C Dory. The transom cap on the starboard side has always had a repair with sikaflex before I bought it but I just noticed it cracked again and some rain water got inside. (I have dried it out the best I could) It has always had a list to that side which I have always contributed to the battery’s but now I’m concerned water has been getting in there for a while. Was wondering what the 2002 transom was made of and if I should be concerned. I had a reputable fibre glass guy in town look at it and he thinks its fine, the hull/transom doesn’t detect any moisture and it sounds solid. If anyone has any info on this matter it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

The 2002 should have a wood--balsa or plywood. The cap is only cosmetic. There should be resin and glass wrapped around the top of the transom (his is where the hull and deck join.

From what you write, I would not worry about it and enjoy the boat.

To tell you how important that cap is, my boat didn't even leave the factory with one. Lots and lots of others didn't as well and is mainly there for aesthetics. If the glass under the cap looks good, I wouldn't sweat this.

I was worried about that too when I got my boat, a 2003. I pulled the trim piece off the rest of the way to inspect and found that there is no way water could enter the transom because the trim was loose or coming off. Here is what it looks like underneath:
