19 foot c dory angler

Hi from Dragonman. I just went to the Portland, Or. boat show. I saw a 19 ft. CDORY Angler there that I was interested in. I've never owned a C Dory before and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on them for me. I am mainly a salmon fisherman, but my wife wants to come along too, so I need a boat that she would feel comfortable with also. Is there anyone around the Longview, Wa. or Portland, Or. area who might be willing to take my wife and I out for a ride to see if that is a boat we would feel comfortable in? I would be more than happy to pay for any gas ect. I mainly fish in the Columbia for salmon, but sometimes I fish out of Port Angeles/Seiku/Neah Bay areas. I also would like to be able to cruise the San Juan islands throughout the year as time permits. One more year till social security is here so I want to have the right boat by then. Thank you for any help and direction.
Denny

Hey Dragonman,

I'm fairly new to the PNW waters and C-Dory but here is my take on the 19. We started with a 16 - a fixer upper - 1990. Our first sea trial was out on Lake Washington at New Years 2006, went out several times afterwards but felt the 16 was "too small" for the two of us (don't flame me all you 16's (its a great boat)). So we went to the Seattle boat show and looked over the 19 and liked the heft of it, the wide gunnels, and the openness of the back. We bought a new 19 from Les at EQ Marine in March 2007 and kept it up at Twin Bridges in Anacortes.
We put a few hours on the boat exploring the San Juans that Spring and Summer, my son came out for a week and the two of us camped on the boat for a week fishing the San Juans. My wife and I have spent the night on the boat at different ports - Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor, etc.
Its a solid boat - I have "almost" never felt scared out in the waves and currents, and even went through some bigger waves on the north side of Orcas, water coming over the bow and plowing down into the waves, and as most will mention the boat can handle more than most of us weekend boaters.
Robbi is the true expert on the 19 - I'm just a newbie. However, as much as my wife and I like the boat we are looking for something bigger. My wife wants the table and galley - like the 22 or 25, I want to try a big diesel engine and would like a Defever 40 - finances will require a compromise somewhere in between.
Bottom line - I found the 19 to have the advantages of the 16 but able to take on rougher water. But it is a small boat and does not have the amenities of the 22 and 25.
Oh, the gas milage has also been incredible.
(on edit - per your question - I am available to give rides on weekends with notice - but I'm up in Everett.)

Cheers,
Tom

Dragonman,Tom is right on. I would have said exactly the same. I had the 16' a great little boat. Went up to the 19'er which I still have. Wife and I have spent nights out including five at Catalina with the Brats. Now I have a line on a 22'er at a very reasonable price. One thing about the 19 Angler is the access to the aft deck for the fishing.Easier to fish and control the boat. I launch, fish, anchor and retrieve myself. I also tow with a smaller truck. I've done 200 plus miles on Lake Powell. 200 plus miles on San Francisco Bay. A 200 mile trip uses about 40 gals. of fuel. The 19'er with the Honda 90 has mucho performance and has a faster cruising speed the it's bigger sisters. It just won't carry as much stuff.  :)

Dragonman-

Here are some threads for you to use to evaluate how the CD-19 meets your needs:

The following compares the CD-19 with the CD-22, which is often a decision that folks are faced with who are considering the 19:

19' or 22' C-Dory

And these two threads compare the CD-22 Angler and Cruiser, which is much the same type of decision as the 19 vs the 22:

Cruiser vs Angler

C-Dory angler vs cruiser

In conclusion, it's my feeling that many of us think that the CD-19 is a great boat, and can best thought of as a daytime fishing excursion boat, while the 22 Cruiser is a better boat for 1) a couple, for 2) cruising, for 3) overnight use, and for 4) boaterhoming, which is camping in it on land when traveling with the trailer.

Most women seem to prefer the larger cabin of the 22 with it's larger dinette and galley. For some folks, the solid Alaskan bulkhead of the 22 is preferable to a canvas one.

The head on both boats is the same. Many women are willing to spend the extra money on a CD-25 to get the enclosed head and shower.

There are some tough choices to make, and the best choice will depend on your intended uses, personal styles, and how much you're willing to pay.

Good Luck!

Joe. :teeth :thup

Denny,

I you're willing to wander up to the Seattle area at some point, I'd be willing to give you a ride in a CD 22. Also, the Seattle Boat Show and C-Brat get together would be a great place for you to pick the brains of a number of owners and see a variety of CD's.

Dragonman -
we have ocean fished off of our 19er for 2 seasons now and love it. We have had several conversations about "upgrading" to a 22 but talked ourselves out of it because that 19 is just too good a boat for just plain old fishing which is what we like to do. From helm station to grabbing a pole is just a couple steps, there is good space in the stern area for fishing activities. The cabin is good shelter from sun and wind yet it is open to the fishing areas. And with the Honda 90 it will move right out, yet you don't blow your whole wad at the fuel dock. And its a "fisherman" not a "cruiser" but you can weekend on it.

Welcome to the C-Brat world, and happy hunting - Marcia & Arnold

Denny, Lots of good information here. I am not an expert, just a crazed boater! :smilep I sent you a PM with some of my thoughts, and an offer of a ride. I looked at the Brat Map, and I don't see any 19's in your area.

My observation is that many of the initial 19 buyers end up with a 22 eventually.

If the boat was only fishing,,,then the 19. But adding in the galley, and dinette, along with warmth from a wallas stove, seems to make a difference to some. I doubt if you could tell the difference between the two when trailering.

I have also had both the 19 and the 22. I got the CD19 last October. For fishing and light cruising it was great. I loved it and still do. But after having it for 5 months, I found that my wife would go for more cruising for longer a longer time in the CD22. Once we decided to commit to towing out West for the Grand Slam of the Western Lakes, we also decided to trade up to the 22. She is definitely a happier camper with the CD22. She is still the happiest in the RV :( So like others have said, if you 90% fish I'd go with the CD19. I wish I could have both. As for towing, I did notice a small difference between the two. My MPG dropped about 1.5mpg with the CD22. I saw very little drop with the CD19. Hope this helps.

Roger
