09/24 - 10/02 - Lake Powell 2010

Patti and Barry,

I believe it is just the level of detail that differentiates between the levels of Hot Maps. For my Hummingbird (backup system), I bought the Gold chart, and it was sufficient. I may buy one for the C80 as well. Older versions will be fine, as long as they have Lake Powell, which I suspect is on just about all of them. Through Cabellas, older versions were a bit less expensive.

Be aware that when deep in some of the canyons, you will have times when the GPS does not have enough sky to get a lock on. It's not an issue, but it does happen.

If you get a good buy on the CF card, let me know. I may do the same. It seems like one of the Brats sells these, so maybe we could get a discount for a group purchase.

Regards,

Steve

A lot of Powell is "eyeball" navigation--look at the water and cliffs/buttes. The water level changes, so charts are only relitative to the contours. All I really care about is to be sure that I am at the "correct canyon". There are good paper charts--and again you can read your position off of them.

We have been to Powell about 8 times--and it was never the same. Sorry that we will miss it this year...maybe we need to buy one of those 16's just to keep up there !...

Interesting!

Gas on Lake Powell is almost $1.00 per gallon CHEAPER than on Shasta Lake here in California! ($4.95/gal.)

I know there are oil wells and refineries back in Wyoming, etc, but it's interesting how the prices get set:

With a gathering in September, not sure if anyone is going to be in the Lake Powell area in the immediate future. We are headed there on Thursday night (June 24th) for a little over a week. Launching at Bullfrog and heading south. If anyone's going to be around, give a shout on CH16 or look for NA0US on the 146.96Mhz ham repeater (100hz PL). Hopefully we'll be back in September. Probably August too.

OK- I penciled it on the calender to be at Bullfrog on the 20th of Sept.
How many C-Dorys will be there?

We are planning to get there a day or two before the scheduled CBGT kickoff, on 9/25.

I'm planning to be there, and will launch at Wahweap sometime just beforehand. I may go a little early, and/or remain somewhat later; as things develop.

The only issue now is 'what to do between now and then!

Best,
Casey

I'm planning on meeting up with the group at Oak Canyon on the 25th, as posted earlier. Are you going a week early, Roger? Staying for two weeks? I thought the main plan was covering the week starting from the 25th onward....

I see a problem -- there is no event signup for this CBGT. If we can get Bill or Mike to set that up then we can see who is planning to go to Lake Powell. I'll PM Bill.

We had a great cruise on Powell, as usual, but this time with 6 of us aboard. Great place to go with kids or grandkids.

Hot 106 degrees so the water felt great.

So how hot was it in the cabin with the windows wide open and no air conditioning? Did you hunt for shade during the hot part of the day. Just trying to decide if I should make a trip in August.

My thought on provisioning would be at the last Camp Wal-Mart at Springville with Pat & Patty. Wish we were going with you 'all this year !! Pat , you will be fine this year with your new brake set-up, but will be with you in Spirit! Just enjoy!!

Bill is out of town, and told me to PM Mike. Nothing yet.

Sorry. What are the start/end dates? I looked through the whole thread and found several. Also, who will be the Cruise Director?

Looks like the northern contingent will be arriving at Bullfrog on Sept. 20 led by Pat, and the southern contingent will be arriving at Wahweap Sept. 25 led by Chris.

These are the dates that I get from the posts in this thread, if anyone has any different dates now is the time to post them.

The cruise director is Chris on Rana Verde. The official dates (as established by Chris) are: put in Friday 9/24 and take out Friday or Saturday 10/1 or 10/2. However, many of us are arriving earlier and/or staying later.

Here is Chris' post of 2/7/10:

Let's set the rendevous for Saturday, September 25, in Oak Canyon. I will launch on Friday the 24th at Wahweap and head up river with any other boats that want to come along. Maybe overnight somewhere on the way and plan on Oak Canyon Saturday. Then on up river hitting the must see spots. I don't think I will set a second rendevous on the north end this year...made for a bit of a lengthy run one day last year. I plan on pulling out on 1 or 2 October.
We may want to rendevous in a different canyon if the water is way up this year. Oak Canyon has been a wonderful spot for rendevous the last number of years...but at higher water levels it is not ideal. Most of the beach in there will disappear when the water comes up. I think it will be OK this year...but water levels are trending up. We will be able to tell when we see the mid summer water levels and will make a determination then.

Chris says he doesn't want to do a second rendezvous on the north end, as per his February post (copied in my previous post of today, above). Where will the two groups meet?
