09/15 - Lake Powell September Cruise

My wife and I would like to come to Lake Powell to look at folks' C-Dorys to help us decide what to get. We live in Moab, so this seems to be a pretty convenient way to look at some boats. WE may even bring our little Zodiac for a few days on the lake ourselves (we usually go out of Bullfrog - a lot closer to the places we like to go for those of us without a real boat yet).
Anyway, Do I understand that Sept 18 would be a good time to show up at the launch ramp to look at some boats?

Thanks all,
Tom

We will be departing Fall City, WA, Friday afternoon the 12th and arriving at Wahweap at some time on the 15th, not sure exactly what time. Could be late afternoon or evening, really don't know how long we will feel like driving each day - it is 1,200 miles more or less, so probably the equivalent of three full days. But we will be there, and you are certainly welcome to take a look at (and a ride on) Daydream...

I'm thinking I might do most of the full two week period from the 15th on. I wonder what dates the group anticipates hanging around Oak Canyon this year. Sounds like the 18th or so is the Wahweap meet. I might be up the lake by then.

Or I could drive trough Arizona on the way and stop for a train ride at Verde Canyon I guess. That might delay me enough to start out with the group.

Bear with me; this is my first-ever posting. Since I just bought my
Ranger Tug, Blue Bayou, 2 days ago, then took it out on San Francisco
Bay, I can now say that I plan to be at Lake Powell mid-September
and join the, what, flotilla, pod, fleet?

Congratulations Charles. We will be bringing our cd22 from Florida. We will be looking forward to meeting you.

I see you're all heading to Lake Powell in September. I'm currently trying to sell my houseboat so I can become a C-Dory owner. If it doesn't sell, I'll be launching from Bullfrog on September 20th and heading south. I'd sure like to find some of you folks and look at C-Dorys! It would be great fun to get more information. Then again, it would be great fun to sell my boat and get a C-Dory, but one thing at a time. I imagine you will be heading north out of Page, so maybe a few days into your gathering, I'll run across some of you on the lake somewhere. You can see what to look for in the way of the boat we'll be on here: http://www.ferrises.com

I don't know how much everyone sees of Lake Powell, but I have been going many times a year for many years and have thousands of photos. I guess I should make some available. From what I could gather, one has to have a C-Dory to create a photo album, which I don't as yet. If that's not the case and anyone can tell me how to create an album, I'd make one and populate it with a lot of great Lake Powell photos.

I'll keep reading here and find out more about where you'll all be heading. I'd really like to get a look at a bunch of C-Dorys so I can reinforce my opinion of why I want one so much.

Here is a photo of "The Horn" which is at about mile marker 123, looking southwest back downlake to the left and uplake to the right, with Castle Butte to the left and Good Hope Bay in the background. October of 2006.

Well, congrats on the Ranger Tug! When we are out together the technical term is "C-Pod"! At least 0n the Upper Left Coast it is common for folks arriving or looking for the group to hail the C-Pod on channel 68. Look forward to having you join us!

Thanks for the photos! Maybe it is selfish, but we kind of hope your houseboat doesn't sell right away - it would be very cool to have a houseboat as a "mothership" for the C-Pod!

If you look at my houseboat, I doubt you will consider it a "mothership." A little small for that. Maybe I should describe it as a mini-houseboat. :)

This in Friendship Cove in April of this year:

I imagine Oak Bay is much different than below, the water has risen about 40 feet since this was taken in April of this year.

Speaking of Oak Bay...we will likely have a rendezvous in Oak Bay...just a little further in from where that pic was taken...on the 20th. Plenty of room...good protection...nice beaches. It can be a little tough to find each other on this lake...it's so huge...and the topography...radios aren't much use. Easy to be within half a mile and never see or hear each other. This will give us a chance to meet up if we miss each other at the ramp.
Great to hear we will have some tugs along!

Hi Chris,

Great idea to have a place to meet.

To provide a little more information about our new Tug owner:
Those that attended my remember Charles who visited at Rio Vista this year. When He arrived I think only Dr. Bob and myself where there. Then a Ranger Tug 25 came in and several other CDs.

Charles emailed me a few weeks ago and said he was looking at a new 25 Tug.

I did the same thing. My first C-Dory experience was visiting at Rio Vista in 2004 and then buying a few months later.

Charles has been inspired by this site and is closing down his house and hitting the road with his new Tug and a new truck.

Lake Powell will be higher than I have ever seen it in the last 6 years.
Can't wait!

Steve

For what it's worth, the CRC (Castle Rock Crossing) is now open, and cuts out almost 12 miles of that loop and "The Narrows", with all that choppiness and boat traffic.

A welcome return to a nice lake level. Still a little shallow, but tons of room for a C-Dory.

Striper fishing is HOT right now, and should get better as the shad grow.

Ken

I just returned from a week at the north end of Lake Powell near Hite. We caught about 250-300 stripers and 50-60 small and largemouth bass. It was great fun, so when you arrive in September, you may find the fishing to be quite good if you get to the north end of the lake.

I will be launching my boat at Bullfrog around September 19th, and will be at the annual north fishing rally held near Stanton Creek that weekend. More than the fishing rally, I would very much like to meet some C-Dory owners and see a few C-Dory setups, so I hope I'll run across some of you during the two weeks that I'll be on the lake after the 19th of September.

I always monitor CH16 while on Lake Powell, so can be hailed there by the name "No Guarantees". In addition, I monitor the 146.960 ham radio repeater on Navajo Mountain (pl 100.0 hz) and my ham call is NA0US. I know there are many C-Dory hams out there, so hope I can meet a few of you. Look for my houseboat while you're on your travels and stop by if you find us.

Here's what to look for:

Hopefully one day I will be able to participate in the C-Dory gathering in my own C-Dory!

What is the tone on the 146.96 repeater? I'd like to program it into my Yaesu...and what's your call?

Pat,

The repeater trustee is a very nice fellow named Wayne Chapman.
Wayne also runs a simplex IRLP node, 3362, on 145.510. If he
knows I'm around, he will move his link radio to the 146.960
repeater, then you can have worldwide coverage with two meters.
Wayne lives in Big Water, north of Page. The repeater and IRLP are
very handy indeed. If you have IRLP capability where you are, just
link up on 3362 and chat with Wayne and tell him I said hello. I need
to call and chat with him, it's been awhile. He is usually around in the
evenings, but not often during the day. He spends a lot of time on
80 meters on the weekends at night.

If you ever would like to contact me, I also run an IRLP node, #3124,
which is located at my home. It is setup as an IRLP/Echolink node, so
has both capabilities. It is almost always linked to reflector
9874, which connects me up with several friends in western Colorado
and one in Texas. It is much easier to call 9874 than 3124 if you ever
find another IRLP node. It is a very quiet reflector with none of the
normal rules for reflectors. It is a very handy way to communicate back
home when I am at Lake Powell if I can get Wayne to setup his link radio
on the 146.960 repeater.

I have not talked to Wayne for awhile, but last I knew, he was going
to link the 96 repeater to some other systems. It has always been a
standalone repeater, so the link will add some new coverage. The
repeater has a PL of 100.0 Hz, but I believe it may not always be
enabled. Probably a good idea to program it in though to be on the safe
side for proper access.

My call is NA0US if you didn't get that before. Hope to run across you
both on the radio and on the lake. I'm quite anxious to see a few -Dorys!

P.S. I should have never posted such a wide panorama in one of my
earlier messages above. It makes reading things on this page a pain, so
I tried to put a C/R on each line to make this message more readable.

Well...we're gettin' close folks! Water level is looking good...somewhere around 20 feet higher than last Septembers cruise. Looks like the cut will be open. Water temp will be around 80 or so...great for swimming or the occasional bath. Don't forget the Ivory soap!
Even looks like fuel is coming down a little. Now if they just don't run out of ice cream at Dangling Rope!!!

I don't know how many of you going to Lake Powell are aware of the latest information regarding Quagga and Zebra mussels. They are really trying hard to keep Lake Powell free of these pests. If you've had your boat in any waters that might have been infested, the NPS makes you decontaminate your boat before you can launch.

There's a very informative website regarding the threat that you all might find helpful:

http://www.keeplakepowellmusselfree.com/

I'm still looking forward to seeing some C-Dory's, so hope I run across many of you when I'm there in September. It should be a great time of year to visit and the fishing has been great. The first week in August we caught about 300 striped bass near the Trachyte Canyon / White Canyon area.

Tony,
I went to that website and read a lot. Whew ! If the NPS really enforces all the procedures spelled out there, we'll be lined up down the highway working at scrubbing boats and boiling water....do you know just what kind of decontamination or certification process the NPS really asks for??

Is it, "Did you wash your boat?" or has the bureaucracy come up with a 10 page form requiring rubber stamps from authorities?
My guess is they ask you where you're from, and when I say Sacramento, they wave me through. Looks like the East Coast has the biggest problem with infested waters.

I can't honestly tell you much about what the NPS is doing other than asking people at the gate if they've been in any mussel infested waters. I store my small houseboat offshore, north of Bullfrog and it never goes anywhere but LP, so when I bring it through the gate, I immediately tell them exactly that. They hand me a one page form, which allows me to check a box that says the boat has not been in infested waters, then the form is dated and placed on the dash of the truck. I do know that if you fail to display this form on your dash, your vehicle and trailer will be impounded, which would be quite a surprise to have upon returning from a nice cruise. I believe the fine is very stiff as well, as in several thousand dollars.

I have only see the decontamination facilities at Bullfrog, not at the south end of the lake, but I imagine they are identical. They involve using very high temperature and pressure water to clean and kill anything riding along in the boat. I think the preferred method of decontamination is to have to boat out of the water for an extended period of time.

I only brought it to this forum's attention because I know they are taking it very much more seriously now than they have in the past. The lower end of the Colorado River system is terribly infested with these mussels. At some point, if Lake Powell is still free of them in the future, I would imagine there will be some additional inspection mechanisms put into place.

My hope is to someday have a C-Dory and cruise many different places, but I love Lake Powell and will always continue going there, so once I am able to cruise other areas, I'm sure I will have to deal with the issue of possibly having my boat become infested as well. I believe the Great Lakes have them, as does much of the Mississippi. I'm no expert, so I could be wrong.

The NPS has more information about the whole issue here:

http://www.nps.gov/glca/parknews/upload ... 080125.pdf

(If the cut/pasted link is truncated, just go to the main GCNRA page here:

http://www.nps.gov/glca/

In addition, they have a link on the main page to get your own self-certification packet before arriving, which saves time when you go through the gate.

Even though I don't know all that much about the problem, I know enough to realize that once a body of water is infested with Quagga or Zebra mussels, it is a terrible disaster. The Keep Lake Powell Mussel Free website has some pretty interesting information.

We have been asked about being in muscle waters the last several years at the gate. We had friends who went in earlier this year, who keep their boat in Calif/Vegas, and again they just had to sign a statement.

Last year, when we came into Calif from Powell (I 15 thru Vegas) the boat's bottom was carefully inspected with mirrors. It is a bit paradoxical, since the muscles can also be brought in via bilge water--and in the past they have not inspected the bilges to be sure that there were no larval forms, or water in the bilge.

Right now, it does not look as if we will make Powell this year--basically it is a sitation where we don't want to drive across the US again, or have the time in Calif. to rebuild the tranny on our Dodge Road Trek to specs which will handle the CD 25's weight. I'll probably leave the truck at the tranny place in Jan. and then it will be ready for next summer--and avoid our driving out several times a year.
