07/22 - 08/05 - The Gulf Island Cruise

I'm pretty sure it will be a topic of discussion at Bellingham...or at Sucia the first night. I guess we'll go to Sucia, but by me the first destination from Bellingham would have been either Winter Cove or Cabbage Island after clearing customs at Bedwell - the distances are relatively short, and Sucia ain't in the Gulf Islands! With people coming and going at different times, and frankly having different interests, it will be real interesting to see how this one works out. Rock-C Terry laid out a preliminary itinerary and schedule somewhere up near the beginning of this thread, but I think he wants to see what people have to say when we get together.

The notion of the Gulf Islands as "the San Juans 20 years ago" is pure myth by me...

I don't know about the myth Pat. Right now there is only about the same number of Americans in the Gulf Islands as there were in the San Juan's 20 years ago..... of course by the time you add us Canadians in, it is getting a little on the crowded side. :lol:

Yeah, I see the :lol:! A "little on the crowded side" is a pretty good description, I just chuckle when I think about folks who imagine they will be the only boat in a lovely secluded cove in the Gulf Islands! If the 16 boats signed up all show up at one place at the same time, it is going to be very interesting!

Since it is coming up pretty soon it seems,I thought I would bring this back to the top.
Laurie has finally had her vacation time approved(it has only been since January when she put in for it .Needless to say we are relieved. This Yacht Club stuff is driving me crazy, and it is only the beginning of the cruising season, but I am ready for some Serious C-Brattin'.
We are just going to kind of go with the flow with this cruise. We have the same time schedule as Pat & Patty, so we are happy they have some ideas. Now all we goota do is figure out what to take and not take. Capt. Jim & Admiral Laurie
 
Just Wanted to bring this thread back to the top. If any one has the FRS radios, remember to bring them. Good for keeping in touch with the shore party, dinghy patrol & other boats in the anchorage. This is the first extended trip with out any of the kids, boy am I looking forward to that. :wink Well Chloe is like one of the kids.

Terry - we will probably leave Daydream at Birch Bay for the B'ham gathering, come down by car each day for the festivities, and then launch on Sunday from Blaine rather than Bellingham for the cruise (after breakfast at the Bayside, of course!). Where on Sucia do you plan to have the group hook up? What time? Our sort of new favorite spot there is Shallow Bay, C-Dorys can anchor real close in, and there is a great group shelter a short walk up the trail - of course, no dock, so a dinghy is a necessity, but I assume everyone will have a dinghy anyway...

If we do stay with Sucia the first night, Shallow bay is our favorite. Protected and plenty of room to anchor. I will be trying out our new dinghy if any one needs transport to shore. I've been thinking about your idea :idea of making the first night at Winter Cove or Cabbage Island. Or Stewart Is. and clear customs Monday morning then head over to Cabbage Is. Maybe we can get everyone together and talk about the options. Will you have internet access at Bellingham? For those joining mid week, we can keep them posted of any changes of the itinerary.

Also.....I've Googled B.C. fishing regs. and see a non-resident daily fee is only $7.50. I'm going to bring a crab pot. Does anyone have any info on shrimping in BC. I hear they are more generous about the limit and the season. I have never tried to catch shrimp before, but sure like eatin them. :smilep
 
Yep, They get bigger as you go North. About the size of small trout! We'll have our pot with us for sure.

New plan for us for the Gulf Island Cruise. Our grand-daughter is not available until Monday after noon, so we probably won't leave Guemes Is until Tues am depending on the tide. So we will do customs at So. Pender and then aim towards where ever you all are. Keep the radios on 68 as cell coverage is not real great up there. I think the provider is Rogers Communication.
 
Terry - update on the plan, please! I will PM you a phone number, as we are not staying at the dock at Bellingham, we plan to be around the dock sans boat afternoons / evenings Friday and Saturday and on Sunday morning, but if folks are planning to get together to talk over plans at some other time, let me know and I will come down.
 
I hope the plans will be posted here because if it is all verbal I stand a good chance of missing some of it. We have to return to Anacortes for the remainder of our daughter's visit but will be heading back up to rejoin the group on Wednesday.

OK, meeting on the dock at the Bellingham CBGT, new plan for week one:

* Sunday - Stuart Island
* Monday - Newcastle Island
* Tuesday - Silva Bay or Pirate's Cove (group may split)
* Wednesday - Montague Harbor, Galiano Island
* Thursday - Conover Cove / Princess Cove, Wallace Island
* Friday - Ganges, Saltspring Island

The idea is to make the longest run early and then wend back south at a more leisurely pace, so at the end of the week or two weeks as the case may be we will all be closer to our launch points.

All is weather dependent. Looks like an afternoon departure.

We are loaded up, and should be heading down to Blaine Harbor in about 15 minutes. We'll poke out and make our go / no-go decision - if I post again today, it will be bad news!
 
Wild Blue is at anchor in Prevost Harbor at Stuart Island. The group is split between Reid and Prevost. 4 C-Dorys now at the dock at Prevost; looks like we're all here for the night.

As expected, Bellingham Bay was the only lumpy part. A light rain (imagine that) that is supposed to let up. Except for the chatter on the radio, all is nice and quiet... and it's close to 5:00 somewhere. 8)

For anyone with web connection on the Gulf Island trip. Kate and I will be unable to make any of the trip due to a death in the family (not immediate, but close enough). We will need to travel to Leavenworth, WA for a funeral on Thursday.
 
Sorry but we also have to cancel plan"B" of joining y'all this week in Ganges.
Grandson still in hospital so we are revising plans daily.

Keep the water warm for us and don't catch all the fish !!
