07/22 - 08/05 - The Gulf Island Cruise

This is a response to Mike from earlier post.

I've been back and forth several times to Victoria, with a dog. Canada of course is totally trusting, just wanting a date that the dog was vacinated for rabies. By telephone.

Returning to the US has been inconsistent. Mostly Customs has had no interest in the dog, but one time they asked if I had any dogfood not in its original packaging. I did. The agent confiscated it, on the reasoning that it might secretly be Canadian dogfood, infected with mad cow disease. Other than this, bringing a dog across has been totally painless.

We have been across the border with our dog twice. We carry an up-to-date shot record with us. The best policy is to keep under the radar. If they don't ask, I don't tell. When returning to the U.S, just keep your dog on board while you are clearing customs. I havn't had a customs agent check out our boat, they just wanted to see the ID of the poeple on board.
As for places to visit, there is a marina and cafe at Genoa Cove that looks interesting. There is also plenty of room to anchor out if that is what you prefer. It is on the north side of Cowitchen Bay.
Hope to see everyone at Lopez.

We will be doing a "mini" Gulf cruise right after the Lopez gathering. Sunday to Snug Harbor, then Tuesday to S. Pender for 6 days based in a house with dock.

I have seen pix of these places (or similar). Can you provide a URL for the facility where you will be staying?

Thanks,
Warren

Warren,

For snug harbor try www.snugresort.com
for S. Pender, there are many properties for rent, try www.breakawayvacations.com
for the rest of BC you can start at www.britishcolumbia.com and drill your way down to where you want to go.
Aternative what usually works is to google the chamber of commerce of the nearest village/town/community.

There are some great out of season rates but everything tend to fill up real fast and you will almost certainly need to pay 50% or so up front.

There was some really nice looking places waaaay up on Cortez Island but that's for next year.

Thanks for those links. Was not able to find quite what I am looking for, so hopefully someone reading this will know what I am talking about.

A guy showed me some pictures of a fishing camp in BC where the cabins were floating along with the docks. You drive your boat right up to your front door. Ring any bells?

Thanks,
Warren

Bring this back to the top.
I've been working 7 days a week for the last couple of months. :crook
This trip is sounding better all the time.

Talking of BC and Gulf Islands brings the issue of Stern Ties to my mind.Does anyone have any recommendation of amount and size of line to take for a 22 ??
I'm sure it has been debated somewhere here before..most things have..

Thx,

Merv

I have 300 ft of 5/16. It has been more than adequate for the dozen or so times I've stern tied in the Gulf Island and up to Desolation sound. Withe the C-dory's we can get in pretty close so that we don't need the length of line some sail or stern drive type boat do. Most times I double the line so we don't have to go ashore to release it.
Ron

Ron,
Thanks for input.
I assume 3 strand Nylon, right ?
Any advantages of Poly ? Like visibility, floating etc. I realise it would have to be thicker for same load.
Merv

Actually I'm using a braided line and its 3/8 not 5/16 like I said. I don't know what its made of but it floats. Three strand nylon is commonly used. I don't see why it wouldn't be just as good. I keep mine in a plastic storage box with a lid. I drilled holes in the box to all it to drain. A milk carton works well for storage as well. The most important thing is just to make the line easy to deploy and retrieve. If you coil it, it can be a hassle to deploy, especially if you only need to use part of the line for your stern tie.
Ron

I know Fred on Anita Marie set-up a nice little line reel system to pay-out and retrieve his stern line. It's like those garden hose reels you find at Home Depot. I think he used 3-strand poly line and attached it to his stern rail. Hey Fred, do you have a pic?

I attached an extension cord reel to a piece of starboard and clamped it to the transom rail. The reel has 300' of 5/16 three strand poly line. Not a great picture but you get the idea. Rons right, if you run the line around a log or tree and bring it back to the boat you don't have to get in your dingy when you leave.

Would there be any interest on making a trip to Princess Louisa during the Gulf Island trip. I know it is a ways, about 67 miles but I have always heard that it was worth the effort.

I see Robbi, Fred & Robin have signed up for the GI tour. It should be great time. If you have any faverate distinations you would like to share, :thup .
The GI Tour, maybe I should call it somthing else. That sounds too much like my military time :crook

Sorry your going to miss the Lopez weekend. Sounds like its for a good cause. I'm hoping to get together with some of the people signed up for the Gulf Island trip and rough out a float plan. I know you two have spent some time in the G.I. area, if you have some can't miss spots you would like included, toss em in the hat.
Congrats on the pending wedding, I hope everything goes well.

I plan on being a follower on this deal. My only plan is to stop at Saturna to visit with a friend that has just built a cabin up on East Point. I have seen pictures, my golly what a view! My sister will be out visiting from Baltimore and she plans on coming along. Should be great fun, starting at Bellingham. Robbi

Patty here. Montague Harbor and a trip on the Hippie Bus up to the Hummingbird Pub (I think that's what it's called) can be a hoot, but maybe not something everyone is interested in. It does mean a meal at a restaurant.

I thought it was about time I posted an update on the plans for the G.I. cruise. A few of us got together at the Lopez gathering to talk about when and where we would like to visit. Everyone agreed that the Saturday market at Ganges would be a nice stop. So getting back to Ganges Friday night, from the north end of the Gulf Islands might limit how far north we can go.
So here is the plan, (subject to change)
Sunday night, after Bellingham, we will be stopping at Sucia.
Monday night at Poets Cove on S. Pender Is. Check into customs there.
Tuesday night maybe Winter Bay on Saturna Is.
Wed. night at Montigue Hbr. (Don't miss that one!)
Thursday night on Wallace Is at Conover cove,(If there is room. We may need an alternative spot.)
Friday night at Ganges for the Sat. market.
Sat night head north to Silva Bay.
Sunday night, maybe Nanimo, Newcastel Is.
Monday head back south to Telegraph Cove on Thetis Is.
Tuesday night, Maple Bay.
There may be changes as we go along, due to weather or if there is some place special the group would like to stay over another night.
If you check out the route on a chart, there is not a lot of travel time, distance between stops. This should allow for those that want to spend some time fishing or just explore.
If you have other places you would like to visit, speak up. I think the key is to be flexable. There may be marinas that are full or can't accomidate the # of boats in our group. I'm sure we can work out the details as we go along.
