06/13 - 06/14 - Pender Harbour 2014

JAY- won't they have more??

Dan- no we have to get back to work right after the gathering. Need to make some money.

For anyone going to princess inlet stop at Egmont and hike to the Skookumchuck Rapids . Its well worth the hike if the kayaks are there.

Hey Dan, glad to see you and Tanya are coming. Our plan is to try to get dock space at Newcastle Island. If no room, then we'll tie up to a mooring buoy. Good point about getting gas before the trip across. I'll have to look into the fuel dock hours. Also, regarding Silva Bay, that would be a good starting off place if you want to avoid Dodd/Nanaimo. We went there 3-4 years ago and the marina facilities were a little run down and the whole bay was crowded with boats anchored out, many of them derelict. I don't know if it's the same.

Sorry to hear you have to cancel Jay and Jolee. But you have a good reason, grandchildren are great!

Oh and Martin. We're planning to go to Princess Louisa on Sunday morning. It will be our first time. Earlier works for us because I still have this work thing I need to get back to.

Peter

Name Tags
Following the lead of Mike who put together name tags for us in Sidney I have bought a package of name tags for the event. If you don't have your name tag handy from a previous CBGT please PM or email me with the following information and the tag should be awaiting your arrival:
Your Name(s)
Your Screen Name
Boat Name
Boat Model (ie 22 Angler)
Boat Trim Color
Home Town and State

It looks like we may have 18 boats if all can make it. Any procrastinators are still welcome!

The location is Fisherman's Resort Marina:
http://www.fishermansresortmarina.com/
Their number is 604-883-2336

If you have not yet registered with the marina, please give them a call and register.

On their contact page you can find a map of the Pender Harbour area. Right next to the marina in Hospital Bay is John Henry's General Store which has a gas dock and liquor outlet as well. Just around a peninsula, Panorama Drive, you come to Garden Bay which has the Seattle Yacht Club, Royal Vancouver, West Vancouver and others out stations. Also this is where Garden Bay Marine Park is located.

We keep Sea Sprite at a dock on the peninsula just around from the Marina. Our house is on Lee Bay overlooking the harbour entrance.

We will check Thursday for any boats that arrive early and will be on hand Friday with an information package for each boat.

If you come over early Friday you can get breakfast at La Verne's Grill a short walk from the marina.

We will make our way to dinner at the Garden Bay Pub/Restaurant at about 5:30 though I can change this to a bit later if required.

I will have suggestions for Saturday activities in the information package.

Saturday at 4:30 pm bring your favourite beverage and come and listen to and interact with Len Lee. Len was born in the hospital in Pender Harbour and attended the one room School out near Irvines Landing. The Hospital is now the Sundowner Inn you can see from the Marina. The school has recently been restored and is now the Sarah Wray Heritage Hall. Lee Bay is named after Len's grandfather and Len has lots of stories of the history and growing up in the harbour. He is also head of the Chamber of Commerce and vice president of the Harbour Authority.

Following Len we will have the potluck dinner on the grassy area above the docks.

Sunday
Take a tour of the harbour, there is 60 km of waterline with all the bays and inlets.
Visit Harry Robert’s Beach on Nelson Island. Tour his old log cabin, see the orchards.
Visit Quarry Bay on Nelson Island
Pop into Green Bay on Nelson Island up Agamemnon Channel on the way to Egmont. A small well protected anchorage.

Any questions, e-mail me or call 604-883-2577

I assume the Nanaimo group will be planning to head eastwards across the Georgia Straits pretty darn early (likely before local gas pumps open) on Friday AM is that correct?

Your feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan and Tanya on C-Renity

Hi Dan and Tanya,

As you move north through the Gulf Islands, you can top up your fuel tanks at Thetis Island marina (just before Dodd Narrows). Then you'll be all set for early departure Friday morning.

Martin.

Good information Martin. I didn't think about Thetis Island. I called the Port of Nanaimo and they told me Petro Canada has the fuel dock in the harbour. I called them and they confirmed that the operating hours are 7:00am - 7:00pm. I think we can make it to Nanaimo before 7:00pm since our goal is to make slack at Dodds Narrows at 5:00pm.

See y'all there!

Thanks Martin and Peter. Fantastic info..... funny, I just placed a call to the Port of Nanaimo to ask about the fuel dock hours and the man asked me to call back in ~ 10 minutes (he was going to call the fuel dock to find out).

But I happened to see Peter's post w/ the info I needed before I called him back. Should have checked the thread for updates before I called the Port of Nanaimo in the 1st place.

Will keep Thetis Island in mind as a fuel option if it looks like we will be late into Nanaimo.

Hopefully, will see all of you out on the water next Thursday or so.

Would also be nice if the rainy days being called for in the extended weather forecast never materialized but would rather have some rain then winds (as long as they don't both come together).

Thanks again gents!

Take care,
Dan & Tanya on C-Renity

My sentiments exactly.

Procrastinators are still arriving...... I finally just phoned Fisherman's Resort Marina and registered for 6/13 & 6/14.

Assuming we arrive in sufficient time we would also be interested in hitting the pub w/ the group on Friday evening.

Thanks!

Take care,

Peter - I know everyone has different tolerance levels, but you do NOT need to wait for slack to transit Dodd Narrows! We have done ia number of times, many different conditions, it is simply a non-issue. You are not on a sailboat or 7 knot trawler! Malibu Rapids is a little different. We have only been there once, and as I recall we probably arrived close enough to slack for it not be a problem. We timed our departure with the departure of the sailboats, on the assumption that they probably were paying closer attention to the tide charts than we usually do! I think Malibu Rapids deserves some respect, but even there the Boston Whalers go through whenever they want to.

I agree with Pat on Dodd Narrows. I have been through on a strong max current without any issues. Just keep an eye out for logs... I saw quite a few going through. Malibu is a bit more challenging but even then, last year we went through 2 hrs before slack on the way in and two hours before max Ebb on the way out without any issues on a fairly strong current. I was looking around and found a short video Stacy took on the way out of Malibu Rapids last year. Hopefully the link will work.

Sounds like it is going to be a fun time - sorry we will miss it. But only 2 years, 10 months, 20 days to go before that w0rk thing stops getting in the way of having fun. But then again who is counting... :cry

Got it guys. I think it was Fred who told me some horror story of going through some rapids in Canada somewhere so I thought Dodds could get way nastier than I experienced previously. But seeing the video, it reminded me that it wasn't that big a deal. As I said somewhere above, we have gone through once before and it was a non-event. In fact, going through Deception Pass last month was a lot more exciting than usual so I get it. Good videos by the way. :thup

Great vid Jan, beautiful clear picture. Interesting to hear that you went in and out 2 hours either side of slack. When I went through last year for the first time (40 mins before slack) I did not see the scenery. I was so intent on watching my GPS and the water directly in front of me, I missed it all. Coming out I did glance up a couple of times, but Malibu Rapids deserves your respect and concentration. However, some of the more senior kids at the camp love messing around in small power boats while the current is in full flow. No fear when you are a teenager!

Martin.

Man oh Man I'm a getting antsy.... Is it time to go yet ? Well just wanted to let folks that are interested know , that I will have on board a few of the C-BRAT burgees for sale , for those who want one and don't have one .

For all those going to Princess Louisa Inlet after the Pender gathering.

WORD OF WARNING, TRUE STORY:

Last June I went tp PLI with my yacht club, 12 boats in all. Weather was beautiful and we all got a space on the dock. We spent the afternoon exploring the head of the inlet in our dinghy's and kayaks. Some of the cliffs are sheer and you can go right up to the rock face and feel the ice cold waterfalls with your hands. This we did, and it was just amazing. Just before 4pm we went back to the dock for our customary drinkies. We were sitting on the dock when we heard some incredible noises like thunder. The granite had split open (probably due to the melting ice) and started a huge landslide. Trees came down like matchsticks. Hundreds of tons of boulders, some the size of cars, came down and hit the water where 30 minutes earlier about 6 dinghy's had been exploring the rock face. Had they still been there, it would have resulted in deaths and casualties for sure. We were pretty shaken standing on the dock and watching. I went back to my boat and got my scotch bottle, I needed a stiff one.
Have fun, but think what you are doing. Nature is a powerful force.

Martin.

Been watching the weather off of the deck (over looks the strait) wind is up every day by 10:00 to 11:00..... so I guess we are going to have to get up early wed. so we can get across the strait before the wind comes up, don't want to play rubber duck in the bath tub.

Been looking at the wind/tide/current forecasts for the Straits of Georgia off Nanaimo. It appears that for Thursday both wind and current are forecast to be minor in the AM. Wind from the northwest less than 10kts to 1100, slack tide at about 1200, currents forecast from the nw at 1100 roughly 1/2kt. Halibut Bank buoy (Station 46146 - Halibut Bank) is a good source of real time data.

Barry - sounds good! We will be aiming for an early morning launch from Blaine and run up the mainland side if we can! Headed for Smugglers Cove to anchor up Thursday night and then over to Pender Harbour Friday morning!
