06/13 - 06/14 - Pender Harbour 2014

Our present plans are to depart Oak Harbor Wednesday afternoon, clear customs in Bedwell Harbour and head north. Not in a hurry so not sure where we will end up that night, maybe as far as Nanaimo. We expect to be in Nanaimo by Thursday for sure, will provision and fuel there and head over to Pender Harbour either Thursday late (if weather weather gods are happy) or join the flotilla heading over Friday AM. Looking forward to seeing everybody.

Hey Barry, We are also leaving on Wednesday AM and plan do customs in Bedwell Harbour , then head north. We may stop off at Roche Harbour for a quick lunch , all that of course depends on conditions , both weather and time... not sure how far north we will get , but will be around Nanaimo area on Thursday , for the night then head to Pender early Friday with the group from there . So anyways we may see ya out there somewhere. WE have much farther to go as we are leaving from Port Angeles ( boat already in the water ) but we can haul the mail as we cross Juan De Fuca. We are leaving early In AM as condition Ain't been all that great out on the strait the last few days . Will keep an eye out for ya.

We are the newbies in Nanaimo just taking delivery of our C-dory 22 TODAY! We hope to join the group crossing from Newcastle Island on Friday morning. Can anyone suggest what time we should be at Newcastle Island in the morning (so we don't miss the group)? We are really looking forward to meeting other C-dory owners. We are sure to learn a few things from the group.

Wow! Getting your new to you boat today and joining in the gathering, that's amazing, good for you guys. I will not see you Friday morning at Nanaimo but look forward to catching up with you later in the day.

Martin.

Blake , Not sure of an exact time that we would be shoving off , a lot depends on the weather . But I would guess some where around eightish in the morning.... Don't know if people understand ish time ? Like eightish would be between 7:45 and 8:15 eightfifteenish is like between 8:00 and 8:30 ..... I learned that from a Blonde that could never be on time to anything anywhere.

I'm thinking the earlier the better to avoid any winds coming up. And this is from someone who is definitely NOT an early bird. One question comes to mind,

Ian, what is the earliest we can have access to the docks on Friday? i.e. if we leave early from Nanaimo, say 7:00am and arrive in Pender at approximately 9:30am, would there be room at the dock for us or would we have to wait until 1:00 pm or so?

So really the question regarding when we plan to leave is dependent on a couple of things: What do the winds and waves look like and what the forecast is for the rest of the day and will we have access to the docks early in the morning.

Either way, I vote for leaving as early as possible if the winds are down and the seas are flat and we can figure out where to hang out when we reach the other side. JMHO

Yeah I hear ya about early riser I myself don't usually get out of bed till 8ish..... but then I don't like to have to go to bed early either . Ah ain't life grand. But also have to say that you are right about the weather the sooner we are on the move across big water the better the conditions , that is usually how it goes but not always .... lets hope for the best.

this was one trip I was really hoping we could make, but with work its not in the cards. Have fun and look forward to the pictures.

When crossing the straight from Nanaimo we take the opportunities as they arise. If it calm Thursday I would take the extra one and half to two hours and come across early evening. In the morning we have usually left Nanaimo between 6:30 and 7am. It all depends on the conditions. We tend to look at the actual conditions at Entrance, Ballenas, and Halibut Bank rather than dwell on the forecast. Yesterday with a strong wind warning it still flattened in the evening.

I am pretty sure you will be able to get into the marina early or even Thursday evening. If not, there is a government dock very close by or you can go into Garden Bay and anchor.

I will come by the marina Thursday to meet any boats coming in early.

Ian

we are going to try to head over on Thursday morning if it looks good. probably go around the top end of texada unless it is heavy nor'west. supposed to be 5-15 se on Thursday.

Barry, with the special powers invested in him as an official certified to christen boats will be prepared to perform christening ceremonies for any boats not having it done yet. This a great ceremony and a fun experience.

Just let us know when you arrive if you would like a ceremony performed.

JakeB, I'm with you on this one Buddy. Just not able to pull the right strings with the weather guarantee and the work schedules.

Maybe next time.

We are right behind you Jamie. We are making the evening run, leaving Comox 6:30pm Thursday. If we have to slow down and can't make Pender before dark, we will duck in to Sturt Bay on Texada, and pop over to Pender in the morning.

Martin.

I'm planning on going over early Friday morning departing through
gabriola passage
Will the group leaving Newcastle Friday morning be going up the vancouver island side and over the top of area wg

So what is the weather looking like ? I can read the reports but don't really trust them any more. Also I know what 10 to 15 knots will do in my area but not up there. So humor me, I have to make a go no go decision by tonight.

Hi Tom,

I have not checked the forecast yet, probably later today or tomorrow morning. I have crossed the Georgia Strait in Nomad, wind 25 knots gusting to over 30. Not pleasant, but always felt safe in the C-Dory. You can pick the things up off the floor later  See you Friday.

Martin.

D Double Damn..... sitting here water smooth as glass but ya can't see 10 yards , no wind , no waves . The weather report says that this is going to burn off , but when , how long do we sit and wait . Finally have a day where I get out of bed go out on the deck to look at the strait o Juan and don't have any wind .... come on lets get going , then the marine layer has to move in . Frustrating to say the least. So departure on hold for a little while . Course once we leave we can haul the mail across , I can hear the fuel getting sucked out of the tank already.... Ok I'm done ranting for now. Hope other folks got a better start today , see ya .

Well I found a good web site for Canadian marine weather. Looks like 10 to 20 knots out of the SE. Which I assume ( hate when I do that) will cause large rollers in the area i need to cross on friday. Other then that it all looks good. Can not decide to chance it or not. Just because the boat can handle it, been in 6ft plus before, does not mean I want to. Still thinking about it.

Well the fog is finally starting to clear time to go.... only a 4 hour delay. Oh we must and should be happy for what we get when Mother Nature does ease up and give us a day like this ..... no wind here , and no waves. Look out here we come .
