06/13 - 06/14 - Pender Harbour 2014

In Cahoots is planning to leave Nanaimo to travel to Pender Harbor on Thurs, 6/12 or Friday, 613, depending on weather. Anyone interested in teaming up?

Reservations made for 6/13 and 6/14....can get in on the 12th if necessary.

We are interested in travelling to PLI after the gathering with any of you that are going. Can hardly wait.

I would like to talk about the plus and not so plus ( being on the water is never a minus ) of the different routes to this gathering. It comes down to two basic different route for me. Launch in Anacortes or Bellingham and run the west side of the Strait of Georgia thru the gulf islands to somewhere near Nanaimo and then cut across to Pender OR. Launch in Bellingham/ Blaine and run the east side of the Strait to pender. Either way its about 110 miles each way on the water. I can make the trip there and back ( almost) on one tank of fuel. I will top off some where before heading back. I could even tow to Vancouver and launch near there but it does not really save me any time due to border crossing and traffic but if I did where would I launch??

If I take the east side and wanted to make it a short run friday night to the Vancouver area where would I stay? whats to see? I average 20 to 27 mph in up to a 3 ft sea if its not too short a wave length. So 5 to 6 hours total run time.

How is everyone else going up? I know that the safer weather wise route is the west side thru the island but been there done that?? Is Gibson worth a stop? or bowen island.

Hi Tom,
This is probably not new info to you, but I'll pass it on. We just did Comox to Friday Harbor and that was also 110 nm. I was cruising between 18/20mph and it took me six and half hours running time. If you are coming up through the Gulf Islands, I would head for Newcastle Island off Nanaimo. You can anchor for free (I know you like that) and dinghy over to the marine park, lots to see and neat trails, also give Shadow some exercise. You can also row over to the Dinghy Dock Pub, for pub grub and beer. You probably won't want the Nanaimo Harbour Authority Marina. With power it will cost you at least $40 for your boat. Next morning set off early, you should have an easy run to Pender.

Coming up the mainland side: I think Gibsons Landing would be an interesting stop. There is room to anchor as well. Sechelt Village would be another interesting stop (you can anchor), but now you are getting quite close to Pender and it may not be worth stopping.

Roger, our plan is to boat up to Nanaimo on Thursday 6/12, probably staying at Newcastle Island. Then we plan to leave early Friday morning to Pender Harbour.

Are there others with the same plan? Maybe we can have a little convoy going over on Friday morning.

Thank you everyone for the advice. Its just what I thought it would be. It all depends on weather on the day we leave. We plan to leave Thursday after work. If we hit the water at 6pm we can make customs at Pender Island or White rock before dark. Friday morning we can make Nananimo on the west side for lunch and cross over to Pender harbor friday afternoon. If on the east side then we can leave Bowen Island area make Pender by dark. Either way sounds like it will work. Just depends on the weather. If the weather is really shitty on friday we plan to hold up at protection island for the weekend. Any one interested in making that the back up weather gathering. Even if it blows 30 knots on the out side running up the Inside of Galiano to Nanaimo is ok. New castle Island party??

It looks like IF I can make this CBGT it will include a drive to West Vancouver, and Launch from Sunset Marine, either Thurs or Friday. Waiting to hear back from them on reservation notice for parking. It is a ~50 mile run to Pender Harbor on the water from there, so a shorter weather (wind) window is OK. (It's about 25 miles in the Strait of Georgia.)

If anyone is looking at a shorter water route, post or PM me and we can compare notes. Land drive for me is about 5 hours, plus the customs stop.

NOt to be entirely weather related, but this trip, for me, is still up in the air.

looks like we are good to go. the surgeon gave denise the ok to travel on the boat. we will probably head over on Thursday morning weather permitting

Hi Jamie,

Pleased to hear that Denise is ok to travel and that you are going to Pender. Daydream and Nomad are leaving Comox marina early Friday morning if you want to travel with us? You can leave your rig in my driveway if you want to save a few bucks on parking.

Martin.

Well it looks like we have a mini-convoy coming over from Nanaimo on Friday morning with In Cahoots and Anytime Baby joining C-Dancer. Anyone else plan on being in Nanaimo Thursday evening? We're getting excited, this should be fun!

We might be there by Thursday night. What time are you leaving in the morning.
We're going to trailer up to Bellingham from Edmonds. Probably leave Edmonds no later than 8:00am and hope to get on the water in Bellingham no later than 11:00am. We looked at the charts for Dodd's Narrows for that day and I think slack is right around 5:00 pm so we would be cutting it close to make it there by them, we'll see.

You're welcome to join us in B'Ham if that schedule works for you.

Hi Peter,

When I came back from Friday Harbor I went through Dodd Narrows one and a half hours before slack, no problem at all. Other power boaters have told me that 2 hours either side of slack works as well. So that does give you a 4 hour window if you want to go through. Of course, I am not encouraging any skipper to push the limits. Just wanted to let you know in case you arrive early or late at Dodd Narrows.

Martin.

Great information Martin. The only time we went through Dodds Narrows was about 4-5 years ago. We waited around with the bigger boats outside for awhile then decided just to give it a go. I think it was about 1/2 hour to an hour early. We had no problem getting through and the Narrows weren't very bad at all. Slight ripples, much smaller than Deception Pass. I have heard however it can get pretty gnarly at max ebb or flood.

Thanks. At least now I don't have to worry if we're an hour late.

Peter

Dodd narrows is really a non event even at high flow. If you have traveled thru deception pass you will be bored with Dodd narrows. That does not mean you should not be careful. The big danger is that you can not see thru the whole pass and it is used for commercial traffic including log rafts. You should call on 16 ( correct me if I'm wrong ) and announce you are going thru, as well as listen to any one coming from the other way.

Yup, Tom is right. We go through Deception Pass all the time and find Dodd narrows pretty benign. There can be some unsettled water on the Nanaimo side with lots of debris so that is what we pay most attention to. You need to make a turn about 1/2 way through and cannot see boats coming the other way. He is also correct about the log booms, etc. Most boats make a Securite' call on 16 before entering. It goes like this: "securite, securite, 22 foot power vessel entering Dodd Narrows from the south/north, any concerned vessels please respond on 16."

After counting those who have registered and those who have said they are coming I think we have 17 boats at the moment. I visited Dave at the Marina today and he is going to send me his list as he thinks he has boats registered that were not on the last list I gave him.

The good news is Dave has space for all, though not all will be able to access power. Hopefully if you do not need power we can shuffle boats around for those that do. Also I am sure we can take turns with power if batteries need charging.

There is a nice grassy area above the docks where we will hold the potluck dinner Saturday.

Let me know if you are interested in going to the Garden Bay Pub/Restaurant for dinner Friday. I have talked to them and tentatively booked the dining room since they expected the pub to be full with a crowd from their docks. The pub is a short walk from the Marina.

I will post additional information later this week or early next week.

Let me know if you have any questions.

For those coming from Nanaimo, on our way back from Friday Harbour we crossed dock to dock in just under two hours with a 15knot following wind. WG was not active. The speed limit in Pender Harbour is 7Kn though many do not pay attention. Dock owners thank you for your courtesy.

We are the newbies in Nanaimo just about to take delivery of our C-Dory early next week. We are interrested in joining in the trip to Pender Harbour for June 13. We have not been to Pender Harbour and if we can, we would like to join the flotilla from Newcastle Island in Nanaimo. Can someone let us know what reservations we may need to make if still available. Looking forward to meeting other C-dory owners and learning more about our C-Dory.
