Not sure how this is going to go. Martin, we will keep you advised of developments! It looks like we will be launching from Blaine rather later in the afternoon on Wednesday the 11th due to a commitment I have in Bellingham from 1 pm to about 3 pm. We may or may not be in the water Wednesday afternoon. We may or may not get to Comox Thursday. Stay tuned!

Hi Pat,

No worries my friend if time restraints means you are unable to get to Comox. It seems that there is quite a flotilla gathering at Newcastle Island on the Friday morning, would make sense to join up with the gang and go from there. Like Ian says, it's 2 hours from Newcastle Island to Pender. Newcastle Island to Comox is 3 hours, and then a bit more than 2 hours, Comox to Pender. I'll look out for you on the dock late Thursday afternoon, if you are not there, see you in Pender.

Ian, we are interested in the Friday night pub dinner, if that is where everyone else is going.

Martin.

The C-Dancer crew would like power, we've already made our reservations and I believe I requested power. We will also be attending dinner at the Pub on Friday night.

Hi all, just reserved a spot no power needed. Count us in for the pub. We are back in Nanaimo for a week. Will cross GS one evening next week. Likely Tuesday. I prefer going in evenings on GS when wind drops. We spent a couple days this week with Jay and JoLee as Hunky Dory was in town. We also visited with Sam and Jon and fleet from the Waggoner group Alaska bound. They pounded across GS yesterday in 20 knot westerly but got in ok to Garden Bay. See you all at Pender! Just got back in town and read the post here... we would like to have power but not a must have. Also count us in for dinner on Friday night. Thanx.

Hello all! We are indeed still planning on heading north for this event; however, our departure timing is still not quite nailed down yet.

Previously it sounded like, due to my wife having to work Wednesday, we might not get on the water until real late evening Wednesday, 6/11. But now its sounding like she will be off on the 11th which would allow us to get out of here a few hours earlier possibly splashing the boat by ~1600 hopefully since I will need to work on Wednesday. Leaving a few hours earlier would (weather permitting) allow us to get across the Straits of Juan de Fuca before it got dark Wednesday evening.

Anyway, never having been past Nanaimo and thinking we would be restricted to the later departure, I was originally planning on trying to shoot for Silva Bay instead of Nanaimo for Thursday under the assumption it would be better for avoiding W/G if it was indeed open and active and increase my likelihood of getting there and filling up before the gas pumps close Thursday evening. It appears on the map like heading out from Silva Bay, though a few miles longer, would better enable us to skirt the northeast corner of W/G if it was active as opposed to having to pursue a longer work around from Nanaimo.

Just how often is W/G active normally this time of year or is it totally random?

I assume the Nanaimo group will be planning to head eastwards across the Georgia Straits pretty darn early (likely before local gas pumps open) on Friday AM is that correct?

Your feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan and Tanya on C-Renity

We are newbies in Nanaimo just about to take delivery of our "08 22' Cruiser just purchased. We are seeking some information about this upcoming gathering in Pender Harbour. Can someone please tell us if we can still register and what is required? Looking forward to learning more about our C-Dory and meeting fellow owners.

Blake,

You just need to make your own reservation at the marina, the info is above in this thread! You should also go to "Event Signups" and sign up, but the main thing is that you need a reservation at the marina. Mention that it is for the C-Brat gathering, they know all about it!

Pat

Dan,WG has been operating from about 0800-1700 when we've been up there. Nanaimo weather usually says if it is operating. Not sure if you've been there but Silva Bay can be quite crowded for anchoring. Wouldn't be my first choice. Here's more on contacting WG:

Additional information as to active hours may be obtained from:

Continuous Marine Broadcast (CMB) WX1 and VHF 21B (listen only)
Canadian Coast Guard Marine Communications and Traffic Services Centres (MCTS) located in Comox and Victoria
Winchelseas Island Control VHF Channel 10 or 16

Thanks Barry. Appreciate your input sir!

Looking forward to seeing you and Patti.

Thanks again Barry.

Take care,

Hi Dan. As Barry says Silva Bay is pretty crowded with moored boats however one can generally find a spot if you have good ground tackle for a short scope. One other reason I like an evening transit of GS is the navy goes home by 5pm. No ships out there. If a daytime crossing is done you can still stay tight to the Gabriola shore and on up to Nanoose staying inshore as tight as you can do avoid bigger waves off shore. One can duck into Schooner Cove or French Creek if ugly. Once west enough near Schooner Cove, head across with waves abeam towards Secret Cove. Beam seas at speed are pretty easy. I try to avoid heading west during the day very far offshore. Frontal assault can be tiring. Staying inshore till there gets one over the top end of Whiskey Golf. The alternate route out of Silva Bay heads to clear the south border of WG until near the mainland. Wind will be on port bow most of the crossing. Winds on the mainland side tend to be lighter during the day. I like to look at marine weather reports for Entrance Island, Ballenas and Halibut Bank. These show real time wind in GS. Look at weather.bc.ca website for warnings. See you in Pender. George

Thanks for your insights George. Appreciate it sir.

Hope you and Carolyn are doing well. Looking forward to seeing you both!

Dan, We have stayed at Silva Bay in the past and enjoyed it. In fact we might consider it for a jump off point for this gathering depending on the weather fore cast. We stayed at the dock and fished the pass just to the south one weekend. Very quite and low key. There are a lot of boats on buoys but more then enough room to anchor. Very beautiful anchorage with just a one or two places to eat.

our plans are all weather related so I can't say if we will go there or not this trip.

Hey Tom! Hope you and Susan are both doing well. Are you guys planning to head up to Princess Louisa after the Gathering? We are hoping to.

Thanks for the info. We have never been to Silva or any other points that far north (except for a brief trip to Nanaimo last year) so I appreciate hearing your past experiences there.

So for those planning on going up to Nanaimo as a jumping off point, will you be anchoring off Newcastle Island or staying in one of the nearby marinas?

Take care,
Dan & Tanya on C-Renity

Nomad is going up to Princess Louisa after the gathering. We went for the first time last year, it's so beautiful we just gotta go again.

Getting the timing right for slack at Malibu Rapids is important. This is a narrow entrance and an "S" bend. You can not see what is coming until you are committed, so useing the radio (Ch 16) is important.

Slack on Sunday the 15th is 1351 hrs, it's a low tide of 1.3 ft (meaning 1.3 ft above chart datum). On Monday the 16th it is 1439 hrs, another low tide, this one 1.8 ft. So on both days the water is gonna be very skinny. So which day we go through Malibu, Sun or Mon, I guess the pub will decide. If the choice is Monday, I would reccommend staying at Egmont Sunday evening. Last chance for gas and beer.

You can get the tide tables for Malibu by going on Google, you'll find them. Also if you have never been through Malibu before (and you don't want to wait for the surprise), you can find Malibu Rapids on YouTube. Some good videos have been taken.

Martin.

We had to council our reservations with Fisherman's & turn about & head back to Bellingham due to possible early arrival of grandchild. We were sure looking forward to the Gathering & the run up to Princess Louisa Inlet.
