05/15 - 05/17 - 2015 Friday Harbor Gathering

Hi Terry. No need to reserve. The dock furthest to the right as you enter the marina is generally for us. As you approach FH veer right you'll see a long breakwater with a dog leg entry near the cliffs. I think H or G docks.
Tie up and check in.
If you have cleared customs that is. We usually clear at Roche first. If you want to clear at FH you can work your way to the inside docks and go up to clear in.
See you there. George

A note about clearing Customs at Friday Harbor: there is a small building on the middle outside breakwater dock, marked for Customs. Tie off there first, only one person leaving the boat and clear Customs by phone, or they will send an officer down or instruct one person to go to the office (up the ramp and north of the marina office).

OK, we are getting excited for the FH CBGT! FH is the kick-off event for what looks like a pretty full summer of San Juan - Puget Sound - Gulf Island - Strait of Georgia CBGTs and cruising for us old retired folks! Our appointment is made at West Coast Marine in Bellingham for a boat service the first week of May, we have not had Daydream serviced for two years, although we did change the oil before Lake Powell last year. Pete does a great job, and he has all the Honda diagnostic gear so he knows exactly what's up, and that gives us confidence everything will be scumpo when we get out on the water!

Thanks for all the replies about post gathering plans. Like Pat (and Patty) dealt with for so many years, I have to schedule my boat trips and vacations around that 4 letter word, WORK. That said, it looks like I'll be going back to work for a few days after the gathering only to go out the end of the week for Caryn's birthday weekend. Gotta save those precious vacation days for the rest of the summer for gatherings, cruising and fishing. I might have to start my own retirement countdown Pat. :crook

Jim is right. Customs gets pretty sticky about having more than one person off the boat before clearing. You will want to have the passports for everyone on board and the baot registration papers with you when you (skipper) go to the phone. Mya not need any of that, but you don't want to get caught on the dock with your p............ paper work not in order :D

The customs dock has a sign there AND there is a yellow painted stripe or bull rail (although it may not be real bright, it is usually discernible) along the front of the dock indicating tie up area for customs.

So I called the owners of the down-rigger and was told that the construction of the restaurant building will not began for at least another year.?????

I will not go into the long explanation of why it is taking 3 years for a port authority to decide on a plan and execute it.

We are working on the Friday dinner option and Downriggers is no longer part of that option. We have talked to them and they cannot offer what they did in the past. We are looking at another specific place and waiting for some confirmation on the specifics. More info soon.

Another option of Friday night is a book reading at Griffin Bay Books in Friday Harbor of a new book, Western Flyer, by the author, Kevin Bailey.
Here's the description, it should be interesting:

Book Event May 15th 7 pm
Griffin Bay Book Store,155 Spring St., Friday Harbor

Kevin Bailey talks about his book The Western Flyer
The Western Flyer was the boat that John Steinbeck leased in 1940 to take
himself and "Doc" Ricketts on an expedition to the Sea of Cortez. The boat
became an icon of American literature; some say it is the most famous fishing
boat in the world. Then it seemed to disappear. The boat had a dualistic nature, it
both explored the sea and exploited it. The Western Flyer had an amazing
voyage as a sardine seiner out of Monterey until the sardines disappeared, then
as a trawler off the Washington and BC coasts until the Pacific ocean perch
collapsed, and then king crabbing in the Aleutians Islands until all the crabs were
gone. Then the Flyer became a tender in the troubled Puget Sound salmon
fishery, and finally it ended as a channel marker in the Swinomish Slough. In
2010 the boat resurfaced as the Gemini, now owned by a developer who planned
to float it in a moat as a high-end restaurant; but the boat sank before the plan
was carried out. It was refloated, and then it sank again and sat on the bottom for
6 months. Recently the boat's been in the news again. A geologist and business
owner bought the boat and he intends to restore it in Pt. Townsend. He would like
to see the Flyer used as an educational resource. Writer and scientist Kevin
Bailey has told the tale of The Western Flyer, the fish it harvested, and the cast
of characters on it.

There was a time back my late 20s when I had a love affair with John Steinbeck's writing. It started with "East of Eden" and I went on to read essentially all of his books including "The Log from the Sea of Cortez". I remember it distinctly even 40 years later!

Since this CBGT will be our first, looking for some advice on what to bring aside from the standard on water camping gear. Are there going to be potlucks or organized meals? Is there an official activity program? Is there going to be an organized cruise through the islands? Sooo many questions! Lol we are excited and looking forward to our first over-nighter on the new (to us) boat. We will be bringing shrimp and ling gear so hopefully we can share some local treasures.

Thanks in advance,
Steve and Launa

Hello Steve and Launa,

We will be the hosts of this gathering and are working details as I write this. We are planning a Friday night restaurant meal on the 15th but the details of what time and where are still fourthcoming. Roughly half the group has attended this first dinner in the past. We had a great place in past years but that is no longer available and other options in town are slim for group reservations.

We do a morning social gathering up the street on Saturday at the local West Marine and enjoy some free donuts and coffee along with a discount for the morning and that is well attended mostly for the socializing. The potluck is Saturday night on a large floating dock adjacent to our reserved area. Each boat brings a dish to eat and we setup tables and have utensils/plates for all. The crowd gets big and there is always plenty to eat. There has been music, giveaways, games along with dinner but it's a little different each year. We normally do boat christenings after the potluck (Pat A will have this honor) so get a fresh drink and join in on anointing the latest C-dorys in the family.

During the day on Saturday some boats do go out and fish together or go for a short cruise but otherwise the potluck is the centerpiece of the gathering and time spent on the docks talking with other brats and looking over all the boats is key for most people. Some boats stay in the area cruising after the weekend and often travel together. There has already been some talk about that in this thread.

Glad to have you join the group and it looks like we have over 30 boats signed up so far.

I plan to post full details the first week of May!

On friday night I will host a short but fun filled "how to ling fish in the san juans" at my boat. Time- when I get there and get settled. Place-which ever slip I am in. Price- what ever you drinking as long as its not wine or captain morgens. Think Bacardi dark or beer I can see thru.

Great idea Tom. I'm there!

BTW, Tom knows of what he speaks. I took Tom out with me to learn about fishing for Lings a couple years ago and it was a lot of fun and we were pretty successful. We would have had an even better day if I knew how to net, right Tom?
