03/06 - 03/08 - Indian Cove, South Sound

Sign me up for Friday-Sunday, though I will need to run in to pick up Kathleen on Sat morning as she has been working late, patching together a balanced state budget.
It is true that the reserved dock element gives us far more flexibility in terms of what we might do.
A few ideas:
1. A run out to shelton and back. We would represent 99% of the boats on this long and narrow/winding inlet. Not much to do when we get there, as no good public dock. But we could raft up and eat lunch.
2. Those in the know in terms of where to go, when and how to catch the elusive south sound salmon could take us on a radio aided moving fishing clinic. We could buy the guides gas, dinner, new fishing gear....
3. Same as above for crab. I would be willing to pitch in (no pay required).
4. We could run down to the head of Budd inlet and catch a nice dinner or lunch at the oyster house or Budd Bay Cafe (come as you are) or Anthony's clean shirt and shoes and pants. All are on the water and are adjacent to free short term dock space for 20 or so of us. If we want to help the brand, I could call the paper who I expect would take and print a photo.
5. The island is a nice idea though I may not have my shore boat by then.
6. Also, if we run up Henderson inlet (past my house) we could go to Woodard Bay see the seal rafts and pause below our house for a photo. We would have to time for high tide and work on a tight formation.
Just some ideas.

Slip for one night is OK at Indian cove - where do you plan to launch?-

Jim

Probably Swantown. Caryn's parents live in Olympia so it would be a good place to stop and visit. Nice restaurants near there too.

Crab season will not be open yet, but we could sure get some oysters, try for blackmouth and catch and release cutthroat.

True, crab will be closed but good crab spots are hard to find in the south end of the sound. I know of a few and answers to depth and what works best for bait. I expect their are a few places down here for crab that I do not know.
Anyway, just a thought.

Here is a tide graph for March 7th at McMicken Island. Not a great clam tide, but a good traveling tide. It would be a good tide to ride the flood into Hammersley Inlet towards Shelton, and the ebb back out.
There are so many places to visit and things to do, including sitting at the dock and drinking a nice cup of :tea . I think that I may see if I can find some cutthroat and or resident silvers to throw a fly to. Imagine that! Anyone who wants, may follow along. Robbi

Even if I was drafting you, which OK I may have been, I had suggested modest pay.
Yup, not much for shellfish, but I can pull a bag of oysters up higher in the tidal zone and then we can pretend that they did not grow in a bag. I should have enough to pass around.

Robbi, after talking with co manager of Drew beach, we could allow access and harvest of 60-70 littlenecks if folks want to cook some up. We have a moorage buoy best in +3' or better tides and a clam rake. They are thick and in shallow sand and the best area should be exposed for a few hours. We may be a bit farther away, near the mouth of Henderson inlet on Johnson Point. After checking though, this may offer more of a sure thing.
I can go down at low tide tomorrow to do a test dig, just to make sure they are as available as last summer.

My test dig down at the beach was good, so if a few folks want to come this way (with shellfish licenses) we should be able to extract 1/2 or all of the steamers we need for part of a meal back at the dock.

Jim,

We plan on being at Indian Cove Fri. and Sat. nights. We will launch at Sequim Thursday and stop overnight along the way. We'll also stop once on the way back. We're hoping others from the N. Sound/Whidbey areas can join us. Couple of takers so far! Hope the weather planning is going well!

Roger

Great - looking forward to your visit - we have planned for 100% weather which so far this year includes - monsoon style rain, snow, sleet, wind and yes some sun. The mornings have been very foggy - The afternoons lately are fantastic - slightly cool but sunny.

Jim

Sorry, we will miss this gathering. Cathy isn't going to change her plans!
I'm pretty sure I'd be out in the cold if I tried to cancel our cruise in Mexico.
I'll try not to feel sorry for my self missing a south sound gathering while I'm suffering in Cabo.

Jim,

We are hoping to make it down there (by sea) with Roger and some other Northerners so if you can find room for the big white steroidally challenged "Dory" that you saw last Year in Prevost we will try to make it happen.

BTW How much water do you have in there on a -1 tide. It shows green on my plotter and in spite of what I tell the Grandchildren, Green is not always good for you!!
(Sorry Kermit)

Water level depends of course on where you are in the Marina. How much do you need? Most CDorys will do just fine at most spots at -1 - my cdory is the furthest into the Marina possible and still floats at -4 but there would not be room to get around other boats in the summer when its crowded. If someone is coming late Friday or Saturday please let me know - the outer guest dock has a couple of spots with no shore power that have probably at least 5 foot of water at all tides.

No worries just arrive safe

Jim

Jim,

Like a CD we only need 2 ft with the engine down.
Unlike a CD we still need 18" with the engine up. Won't hurt if we sit in the mud as long as there are no hard/sharp bits!
So it should not be a big issue.
Maybe an end slot would be a good idea as it may be later when the North Sound Fleet arrives. We would prefer power but we do have a generator and/or lots of wire

Sorry, Gus and I will not be joining you this year :(

I have an on the water training all day Saturday March 7th with the CG Auxiliary.

I know you all will have a great time :!:

Jim,

It has become evident that we have no chance of getting the damage survey and repair work completed before the end of next week so we unfortunately have to bail out of this one.
Hope to see you and all our C-Brat friends at FH.

Merv & Kathy
