03/06 - 03/08 - Indian Cove, South Sound

Steve, Pat, Jim, Roger, Randy, Karl, Dave, Robbi, and anyone else I missed.
Whats to say we can't do both dates. There is a lot to see in the south sound, & we had a great time last year at Jarrel's Cove.
Count us in for whatever dates work.
Steve, those shrimp-ka-bobs were the bomb.

Is this one of two, with an Indian Cove sometime earlier? I can sure set up the signups and add it (them) to the calendar if we're sure on the dates and places. I can link this discussion to the Jarrell Cove signup and split off the Indian Cove posts to a new thread if that makes sense.

OK, sounds like we have dates - June 19 - 21, if that works lets see if we can get a signup sheet! I assume it is Jarrell's Cove unless somebody has another location to propose!

Mike - not sure at all now, Jim (Endurance) is taking charge of Indian Cove, MAYBE there will be a Jarrell's Cove too - stay tuned. What say the rest of you, Indian Cove in March and Jarrell's Cove in June?

Good to hear there is enough interest for two possible S Sound CBGT's

As I said above I would have more information about the availability of Indian Cove after the weekend. I am currently responsible for some very high risk patients that require my full attention - during the week. I had originally planned to do early May again as we will have had our annual Marina cleanup and work weekend - by then. But would respect need to miss the dates in early May that are important to fishing season.

I need to contact Marina committee members and Harbor master who is away now before I post a date.

You are certainly welcome to set up a time in June at Jarrell cove - I don't want responsibility for trying to guess if the dock space that is not reservable will be available then as other clubs also use Jarrell as a destination.

Looking forward to seeing a few more CBrats in S Sound

Jim, I am all for a March get together down here. In fact every other month would make my day. Use of the smaller marina is a great idea that I look forward to. March also has no conflicts as to the very tight prawn season in other NW waters.
I think we got off track based upon my false belief that this event was intended to take place in May as it did last year. If that were the plan, then my comment would be, why not push till June when we could hunt and gather with predictable success and make the gathering even more fun. This would have avoided the prawn conflict, as would March.

As for June, you are right that dock space at any state park can be tough to plan for as anyone can tie up for 14 days. If a June first weekend crabbing event was to be planned, use of your marina coupled with the showers at Jarrel Cove would be ideal. I am not sure that anyone can set that up though, and booking two weekends for C-brats at your marina may be pushing things. If not, I would be happy to help.

Help. I did a search and got over 50 pages of posts. Could somebody post a link to the launch sites? Thanks.

For the two ramps I would recommend you should google Swantown marina or port of Olympia. This requires a longer run and fuel can be picked up 1/2 the way at Boston Harbor. Parking is good, the ramp is protected but this choice will cost you time and fuel.
Also google Zittles marina, a private marina located near the tip of Johnson Point. Parking has been crime free, the ramp and float are good in +5' or better tide, they also can lift you in and have a small store for ice and fuel. The fuel here and at Boston harbor can be trusted year round.
A third option with a longer drive from I-5 is a ramp next to the bridge between the mainland and the S/W end of Harstine island. I have seen it, it was recently upgraded but know little else about it.

Thanks for the launch information. By the way, I like that "interior" seat in your album. That might work just right in our 16 footer cockpit. Any details? Thanks again.

Marty - I think we will probably do Swantown. We have done Zittels a couple of times, and it is OK only IF you can time your arrival and departure for high tide - otherwise, the float is likely to be high and dry and launching to require some acrobatic maneuvers!

We have a nice low tide today in the daylight so I took a look at me oyster bags and I would be glad to bring 20+ oysters and perhaps a few dozen littleneck steamers so long as I know they will be devoured. So will bring this up again when things take shape.
We would cook the steamers in some broth and wine & vegies. We will need some good beer. Hmmmm where could we get some good beer?
We could try digging for some. Perhaps Pat can bring a shovel and a bucket so we can dig for beer.

Not sure if we can make this or not, guess dates and work are the hangup at this point but if we do, would like to launch at Brownsville, (which is a pretty nice place, reasonable fees, good parking and very protected.) However that would mean going down through the Tacoma narrows. Question for those of you that boat that end of the sound: How particular do we need to be concerning tidal flow at that point? Right smack on the slack tide time or do we have some leeway? Plus or minus how much time?

Thanks and sure hope we can make this.

Worry about wind, or weather in general, rather than tide. It's true, of course, that wind can interact with tide flow in a place like the Narrows to make matters worse there than elsewhere, but your boat will have no problem contending with tidal currents. I'd probably consider tide more for time and fuel efficiency reasons than anything else. There can be some pretty good rips (I've found the worst is often south of the bridges, toward Fox Island), but nothing that should keep you from safely passing through. Just slow down and save your fillings. I've been through the Narrows in my 16 footer and my 23 footer with and against all manner of tides.

Bill, thanks for the info here'

We will keep the tide, current and weather conditions under consideration. Sure would like to get to a South Sound event at some point. Looking forward to that, and a trip under the Bridges.
