Repair log - wet transom core

I did a transom on a classic with Carbon Core. The work is the prep, cleaning the old core. I added a couple layers of glass to the outer skin, this served two functions, added a bit of strength but mainly wanted to fill all the holes 😀. You can view some photos under the Hunky Dory album.

Repair cable steering or replace with hydraulic

I’ve had lots of years of reliable cable service, but also had one break on the water and multiple frozen cables. In my experience, hydraulic steering is easier to install and there is zero torque steer. If you are keeping the boat I’d go hydraulic.

Would You Cruise San Juan Islands in 16' C-Dory?

Check out the C Dory Facebook page, there are a couple of 16’s that cruise the San Juan’s. I know one will be at the Friday Harbor rendezvous. They are a capable little boat.

New to me Boat questions: round 2

Based on your use, rarely in salt or brackish water, I’d consider removing the bottom paint entirely. That said it is easier to scuff the hull and apply another coat of the existing bottom paint than it would be to strip to Gelcoat and polish. The two coats of epoxy your surveyor recommended is...

  9. I was having issues with the port and starboard Downrigger cables tangling. The c Dory narrow beam and the fact that we have a lot of current in the San Juan?s are the problems, I found these Willie T?s weights that track outward. Not another tangle, even after running a third Downrigger. Not cheap but well worth the $$$.

looking for assistance in replacing two cracked windows

I replaced the slider glass on my 22 this year, it’s pretty straightforward. There is a step by step video on the SeaGlaze website. Go to the support tab then videos / downloads. A local glass shop cut laminated safety glass for the project. Personally I wouldn’t go acrylic or Lexan. Good luck

    Dyneema Anchor Rode

I have 200ft of 1/4” on my drum winch under the chain and 150ft of nylon for deep anchoring. The major benefit of the dyneema is in its small diameter to strength ratio. I don’t see the benefit for your application as your windlass requires 12mm rope to operate.

Bottom paint in the PNW for trailered boat?

I used Pettit products, really happy with the results. Two coats of Pettit Protect Epoxy Barrier Coat followed by Odyssey HD ablative bottom paint. I’m in the Bellingham area.

    Repower Time

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the new EFI motors. As previously mentioned Ethanol Free fuel will eliminate many future issues and not a bad idea to support the dealer that will do your warranty service should it be needed. I repowered last year with a 115 Mercury command thrust, No...
