my oil looks like a milkshake :(

"Brand new blem" for 10K would be my personal choice, for speed of repair and you end up with a brand new engine for not that much more than the used/rebuilt route. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you choose. Would really be curious to know what conditions caused your motor to fail...

Fresh Water vs. Salt Water motor

"zinc" is really a generic term for a sacrificial anode, though many do contain some zinc. As Bob mentioned, you should use the specific sub-type best suited to your primary type of water use. I believe for saltwater the correct "zinc" is an aluminum alloy less noble than the motor's alloy...

Might have found one but have concerns

That was a good motor in its day, and in fact the boat was designed around it. I have been down this road before, but with a 16' Angler. (Ended up with a new Honda BF 50, and around $8K underwater in boat valuation within months.) There will be a new motor in your future, no doubt. Does the...

    Mayday, yesterday, Sucia Island

In fact boats of various types and sizes hit rocks or run aground in the SJI every year. Others end up on the rocks due to engine failures. I’ve seen a few doozies. Some rocks are visible only on low tide. Most are charted. We were in Active Cove at Patos last weekend and some suggested leaving...

    Sailboats in a marina.

I’ll add a few to date myself: Drive in movies Doors left unlocked (Seattle) Two hand touch football in the street Tricky Dick Nixon Play LedZeppelin backwards to hear the devil Ditto on car rides with windows rolled down Happy boating to everyone!!

    Low Ball!

Agree with Foggy here. I've noticed that sellers with unrealistic expectations are far more common than buyers who make truly outlying offers ("lowballers"). I've been looking at a particular power cat for almost 18 months. I like it, have the $$, and would pursue it, but I believe it's...

    Tomcat build questions

Thanks for the thoughtful replies. Bob: your post should be archived as a guide for would-be Tomcat purchasers and I thank you. Mike

    Tomcat build questions

Thanks for your replies. I will look into the airhead toilet as I have no love for complexity and it’s associated challenges. Rick: not to pry, but what is the approximate $$ commitment for the boat with motors? Do you know the approximate discount for the sport model? Can’t wait to see your...

    Tom Cat Canvas

Rick: congratulations on your new boat, how exciting!! DK if they are still in business but we used king marine of Seattle for past canvas work (cd 22) and were well pleased. Keep us posted on your progress. Best, Mike

Also, does anyone know how the new "sport" model differs from the existing Tomcat?

    Tomcat build questions

We have identified the 255 Tomcat as our likely next boat as it "checks many of our boxes" for our boating use. Not many available currently, but we probably won't buy until this Fall. Reading and researching everything I can. I've read about significant finish upgrades beginning around 2009...

    Tomcat 255 repower

Would you mind sharing approximate cost of your re-power? May have a 255 in my future and would love to know the cost of that upgrade in round numbers. Thanks so much, Mike

Any experience towing a TomKat with an F-150 or similar?

I hope you didn't use this logic to convince yourself to buy the truck! All joking aside, you have a seriously badass boat and truck combo!

    2018 Marinaut find (east coast)

My guess is that there is not a complete 3-hour boat available for that price. This seems like a dealer ad awkwardly presented as a used boat for sale.

    Spring service question

Greetings. 1. It's been 4 years, time to service the water pumps on both outboards (Honda 135 and 8HP kicker, both <200 total hrs.). When this is done, is just the impeller replaced, or is it best practice to replace the entire pump, or some other degree of additional maintenance beyond the...

    Honda Engine Block Casting Fault

Barry: The Honda BF 130 of that vintage is not considered to be a great engine, irrespective of casting flaws. It was heavy, not overly reliable, and was superseded with the re-designed 135/150 which are much better motors. Not sure this is what you want to hear but I believe it represents...

    C-Dory prices

Wow, I was reading along in this thread, and only when I encountered an old reply of my own did I realize it was from 2008! All the talk of empty marinas and fire-sale prices on unsold C-Dories was jarring, as I normally have a good ear to the ground of the economy and didn't see things being...

    PassageMaker article

Of the boats reviewed, the C-Dory is built the lightest, structurally. Perhaps the heavier construction and layup schedules of the others tends to better muffle all types of sound? Or maybe the C-Dory's flat/planing hull started to bang a little at speed, while the others (semi-d and deep vee)...
