Anyone else ever left their plug out?

Not a plug. But on a prior boat with an inboard I did have a raw water coolant hose pop off while 10 miles out at sea. Bilge alarm saved the boat. And me. Lesson learned...

Coast Guard Auxillary Boaters' Safety Class

I agree -- USCG Auxiliary provides excellent support for recreational boaters. Seamanship is a learned trade that is a combination of training and experience. Years ago when I used to teach sailing out of Berkeley (in the wind tunnel just inside of San Francisco's Golden Gate area --...

    Catalina -- Local Knowledge Needed

Thanks Bob, Steve, and Boris. I appreciate the insights. It looks like the mooring reservation system is no longer in effect -- which is disappointing. I'm in DC and NYC with the family for a couple weeks -- great places to visit -- though the humidity has me looking forward to a visit to...

    Catalina -- Local Knowledge Needed

Attention Catalina cruisers with local knowledge! I'm noticing the increase in So Cal boats on the site, especially in relation to Catalina cruisers. I'm a frequent visitor to the Island, though in recent years I've managed to avoid busy weekends. With a shift in my work schedule and kids...

    New Pressurized Portable Tanks

Cal EPA estimates that the 9-10 million residential gas cans in California release about 87 tons a day of reactive organic gasses (what we used to call VOCs) -- the emission equivalent of a million cars. ROGs emit through permeation of the plastic as well as venting. The concern is not the...

    New Pressurized Portable Tanks

I just bought one of these tanks with a new hose for my Tohatsu 6. Someone walked off with my old tank and hose sometime over winter. I assumed the new pressurized tank would create issues and I was not happy about the prospect -- but after using the tank on my dink for 3 days in Avalon I...

    Need for kicker?

I use the 20" and I really like it. It gives me confidence that there will be sufficient power in forward and reverse for use on the 22 -- and I have had no problem with use on the dinghy. It is a little harder to beach, but I just pull it up (tilt) -- much of the landings on Catalina are on a...

    Need for kicker?

I also have the Tohatsu 6 hp long shaft. It's a great little engine that will take a lot of abuse -- I use it on the dinghy when at Catalina -- and hang it off the transom of the 22 for use as a kicker (though I've never had to use it in an emergency). It starts easily, though may need to be...

    HARD TOP FOR COCKPIT 2013

I've thought about doing something similar for a while. Yours is particularly well done.

More on Navigation "apps" versus navigation electr

I also only use the IPad as a back-up -- I've had great success with my Standard Horizon CP390i -- and I always carry my Garmin handheld chartplotter as well as my paper charts. But, considering the Navionics wouldn't open, I was somewhat unpleased. I can't imagine anyone is flying aircraft...

To Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 -- or not to Tab 2?

My previous post notwithstanding, I'm thinking about buy a Galaxy Samsung 2 - 7" tablet. It is so darn cute. I'd like to be able to run mapcharts on the boat, and offline GPS in the car. Has anyone had success in these areas with the new tab 2? I know Google's Nexus 7 is also out now, and...

More on Navigation "apps" versus navigation electr

I've been using the HD Navionics (US & Canada) with mixed success on my old IPad I. When it works, it's truly wonderous. But, on two or three occassions after using it when I try to open the program the following day it opens to a dark screen with no chart. The boat's position marker is...

Thinking about a 1993 22' Cruiser for sale.

I bought my '94 22 cruiser in 2007 and have LOVED the boat with zero problems in hull/deck. The 2 stroke on the other had, lost a bearing on my way back from Victoria to San Juan Island in the second season. rather than spend the money to repair that I bought a new Yamaha 90. Aside from the...

    Costco boat?

For what its worth I've had the WM RU 260 for over 15 years and the boat has worked reliably. Had to have a valve replaced at one point. I run it with a Tohatsu 6 -- same one I use as my kicker on the 22. The PVC has worked nicely. The costco boat may be similar.
