USCG inspection sticker and Boater Card

Tyboo, You crack me up! Troll toward a cruise ship, eh? They hailed me one day as I paddled alongside (150 feet out) a cruise ship at the port, despite me being recognized on sight by the USCG enlisted, and Willie as well, "Dave, is that you?" Other days, again solo in a sea kayak, I have...

USCG inspection sticker and Boater Card

Tyboo, we boat the same waters, yet the USCG has never checked me. Nor has the County marine patrol, except one time at the John Day ramp. Willie gave me a sticker. OTOH, four of us, in full sea kayaking gear including PFDs, radios, and dry suits, got a full inspection at the Nehalem River...

USCG inspection sticker and Boater Card

Mark, Similar rules on the sticker in OR. Typically, a Sherrif's marine deputy or a USCG Aux volunteer does the inspection at the ramp or on the float in a marina, looking for the basics. And for the Aquatic Invasive Species sticker. Got inspected once, and the deputy asked me to...

    Hosteling to Bella Bella

Good question. These folks are not in the boat/trailer shuttle business, but they are a can-do crowd. They would know who to trust in the Charlottes with this chore. http://www.moresbyexplorers.com

    BC Salmon farms news

Very good discussion of farmed salmon, in the context of market forces and biological concerns vis-a-vis effects on the viability of commercial and sport take of wild fish. I live in a coastal city with a rich heritage of commercial harvest of Columbia River salmon, and a growing for hire sport...

    2018 Inside Passage South

Colby, all but the most remote places will have debit/credit card capability. As thataway details, plastic will invariably give you the best exchange rate, even with the nominal fees attached. Better than any cash register transaction, anyhow, except for Black Ball ferry from Port Angeles to...

Do any brats use marine charts?

I have scooted past marked points in the San Juans which had a shallow shelf extending a hundred feet or more out into otherwise navigable waters. Once or twice, I avoided running afoul of these hazards only by "reading" the surface of the water over the shelf. My bad. If I were a more aware...

Cell Phone Coverage Cruising BC (& launching)

Colby, We make two or three vehicle trips a year to BC to visit relatives, mostly on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, but also up above Whistler a hundred miles from Vancouver. Rather than tack on to our ATT phone, we add minutes to an inexpensive flip phone which we bought at Walmart...

    Parking Security

Colby, et. al., much depends on where you live. We have all those issues here in Astoria, but to a much lesser degree. Secured boats are relatively safe in the marina because it is a long way up a float to annexit, and the area is patrolled by Port of Astoria security. OTOH, anything loose or...

    Intersting Vessel

Bob, I believe Westerbeke produced both a diesel and a gas engine from that Mazda industrial engine block. I could not find anything in that CL blerb indicating which one this boat had/has. If gas, 3000 hours might be kinda high. For the record, I installed a gas Westerbeke 70 in my...

    Barkley sound

Ken, I have never anchored in the Brokens, but the two most popular anchorages are Effingham Bay and "Turtle Bay." Effingham is huge, and frequented by larger vessels. In a strong NW wind, it gets pretty rough, and smaller vessels move into the lee of Gilbert, at the N end of Effingham...

Anacortes Hwy 20 Construction on now

We had a major choke point here, where Hwy 30/101 teed against SR202, west end of Astoria. A light there would have mandated one or another traffic stream would have to stop, then start. After much debate and more doubt, a roundabout replaced the whole thing ... a "small" one. Worked fine...

    C Dory 22 on Sand

Donald, on soft sand or hard sand, no worries other than those specified. When the tide returns, if there is much of a sea running, you may want to set an anchor off a bit to deeper water, so that the boat is not knocked about as it refloats. Save some abrasion in any case. Further, if you...

Condensation Problem in a 22 Cruiser.

Aaack! What thataway said! A JetBoil is a very serviceable backpacking/climbing stove, and lights easily up to at least 12,000 ft. Definitely low O2 if it will not light.

Condensation Problem in a 22 Cruiser.

To decrease condensation to a minimal level you have to increase the R-value of the hull/added insulation. A few coats of paint will not do it. You need to add a layer of foam insulation, per thataway's methods. I would guess a quarter inch or three eighths thick closed cell foam would work...
