Been going to Barkley Sound for over 15 years. We usually boat there, departing Port Alberni. About a 40 mile ride to either Bamfield or Ucluelet. We have been staying at rentals when we get to destination, but many moor within the Broken Group or at Bamfield or Grappler Inlet. Fuel is avaiable easily in Bamfield, Ucluelet, or Poett Nook. The waters are quite protected, and fishing good. Supplies and resturants available. Beautiful spot, that you can easily spend a couple weeks exploring. Lots of kayaks explore the many islands. When we stay the first nightin Port Alberni, we stay at the BestWestern. They allow us to leave our trailers and trucks in the parking lot during our trip down the Sound. Launch is at Clutesi Marina right in town about 1/2 mile from Best Western.

Barkley is really one large embayment dotted with small groupings of islands, most notably the Broken Group and the Deer Group.
Each Group has favored protected anchorages, very scenic on a scale smaller than Clayoquot Sound, with tiny anchorages, most protected to varying degrees. Easy access beaches to many of the islands, more so in the Brokens.
And, as mentioned, easy access to fuel and groceries at three main spots. Anchoring out options lots of places, and a small moorage to floats in Robbers Passage at an outlier of the Port Alberni Yacht Club: free water, and low cost hot showers (best at low water when the gravity feed from the water source has more oomph).
We have explored just about every nook, bay, and backwater via sea kayaks, over a period of 20 years. Many of the best quiet bays see very little use. Get hold of CHS chart 3670 for overview and planning in the Broken Group.

We are planning a trip to Barkley Sound mid June this year. We plan to take the BC Ferry from Tsawwassen to Nanaimo, then drive to Port Alberni. What are the best options for truck/trailer parking at Port Alberni? What are some favorite achorages in the Broken Islands? Is it worth fishing this time of year?

We have left our vehicles both at the launch area andtheir remote lot about 1 block from the launch, and have also left them at the Best Western motel lot for about 1 week for no charge. The first night at the motel we did have food items stolen from our coolers. There are homeless people that wander the lots at night.
We too are hoping to make a trip to Barkley sound. We have considered putting in at Neah bay and making the trip Via Pacific Ocean to Barkley Sound. We have been as far as Swift Sure Bank and that is almost 1/2 way there.
It seems doable during periods of Calm water conditions in the summer. We will have Nexus passes and won't have to worry about accessing customs dock. We are curious if any other brats have made the trip on this route.

Effingham is huge, and frequented by larger vessels. In a strong NW wind, it gets pretty rough, and smaller vessels move into the lee of Gilbert, at the N end of Effingham, adjacent to the CG and a nice beach, complete with composting toilets.
Turtle is an acquired name for the opening defined by Willis, Dodd, Turtle, and Walsh. It has fair protection from all wind directions, and is favored by smaller vessels. Composting toilets on Dodd.
The "lagoon" defined by Jarvis and Jacques is very protected, but with a dogleg entrance and a bouldery bottom. Favored by trollers and smaller fishing vessels.
There are other smaller anchorages, which some chartwork will ferret out ... especially in the Pinkertons. You also might want to visit Bamfield for a boardwalk visit and access to groceries. Possible tieup there, one of the lodges. Charming little tourist oasis. The adjacent Deer Islands are a favored area for smaller vessels, with an outlier setup in Robbers Passage, run by the Port Alberni Yacht Club (water, bathrooms, moorage, very scenic). Very friendly people, full of reliable local knowledge.
The lodge at Sechart, behind Canoe Island off Sechart Channel, is good for a short visit off their float, has a bar, and rents kayaks. Google Lady Rose Marine Services for details.
We park at the launch area in Port Alberni and have not had any trouble there. Anchorage favorites of ours are the small bays between Dodd, Walsh, and Turtle islands plus Effingham bay and even East of Clark island if the wind is right.
Between Batley and Wouwer would be another place to consider but only if the sea lions are not making too much noise at the time. The lagoon between Jarvis and Jaques is really quiet, but go slow to avoid the charted rock at the entrance.
I will be back there again by kayak on Thursday this week!

We are at Port Alberni and prepping to launch for the Broken Islands. While doing some route planning on our Garmin chart plotter I realized that our SD card does not cover outer Vancouver Island. There are a few marine stores in the area that appear to sell Garmin electronics. Hopefully we can find a card tomorrow. I did cache the map on Navionics but always used that as a backup for the Garmin. I have only ever bought the SD cards online. Does anyone know if they are typically stocked where Garmin marine products are sold?

Judy and I will be sea kayaking in the Broken Group starting June 21 for 8 days. We will wave at C-Dorys. If you see a red kayak and a yellow kayak waving at you, wave back. We will also be kayaking in the Discovery Islands for a week in early July launching from Quadra Island.

Appreciate everyone’s good advice on the BGI. We have spent a week so far and have really enjoyed it. We have been base anchoring in the island clusters and exploring from the dingy. We made a run to Ucluelet yesterday for fuel, water and groceries. Sounds like the local
charters and sport fishers have been doing well. The trip back on the open ocean was a bit intimidating but we are back in projected waters. All in all it has been a good way to jumpstart retirement. ken

We took Journey On to the west side of Vancouver Island in 2009. Spent some time in Barkeley Sound. Left the truck trailer in Port Alberni, across from the launch ramp. The trip to Barkley included several anchoring spots.
