We use very thin black plastic trash bag material cut to fit. It makes a temporary tented window for cruising in to the sunset. Tact it up with velcro or duct tape. Roll it up when not in use. It covers the whole window and takes care of both the sun above and the refection on the water.

Sounds like they were lucky to have been spotted and rescued. I wonder what type of gear and experience they have. There are hard core paddlers that would use a day like that for training and testing gear. Race to Alaska types. We have friends that kayak 100 mile days, Catalina Island and back...

I converted ours to a standard water hose fitting with a few adapters from the hardware store. We can now use any garden hose nozzle (it has more choices of spray modes). It can also be used to wash things down on the boat or trailer by attaching a water hose to it.
