I'm a retired geek, and still proud of it. :D

    Laptop Table or Mount

This summer I built what looks like a serving tray for my laptop. It sits on the port-side seat, across from the helm. My only complaint after use, it blocks access to the port-side mooring cleat out the window. You can see photos and drawings here...

    Right of way!

On the Mississippi you'll often hear a tow skipper on the radio say he'll "pass you on the one," or sometimes "two," one for "I'll leave you on my port side," two for "I'll leave you on my starboard side." These refer to sound (horn) signals A lot of folks think this just means port-to-port...

    Full or Empty - Winterization

I store with mostly empty tanks, but for a different reason. I tow my 22 to Florida from Wisconsin each winter and don't want to drag the extra weight of 40 gallons of gas in the boat.

    Interesting Boat

One of my dreams is to be a live-aboard on a Krogen Manatee 36, which will never happen, since my wife has her roots dug deeply into a Wisconsin farm. But it's nice to dream. For the size, you won't find a boat with more living space than a Krogen. Didn't know they made a 39.

    09/09 - 09/10 - National Mississippi River Gathering

I'll always remember the sign on the wall in the Cafe: "If you're lucky enough to live by the The River, you're lucky enough."

    09/09 - 09/10 - National Mississippi River Gathering

The Fishers did an outstanding job organizing this gathering, and I'll definitely plan on being there next year. I have a few photos here: http://smittypaddler.com/cds/cdl/UpperM ... /index.htm

    NOAA charts on a Droid?

I haven't found a focus-automatically-on-current-location setting, but I did figure out how to tell it to focus on central location now, by clicking Menu, then GPS (Duh! Sometimes I feel really dumb). There's also a massive help under menu for Navionics as well.

    NOAA charts on a Droid?

OK, I found it. All I had to do was get my present location on the display. Does anybody know, is there a focus-automtically-on-present-location option? BTW, it does report my location accurately, e.g. 44 13.737 n 88 33.437 w.

    NOAA charts on a Droid?

I just noticed this: >Wonder if there is any difference in the GPS accuracy of the Droid and the Droid >Incredible? Might be a reason to not get the Incredible... >Warren I tried earth/nc on my HTC Incredible, and it showed my present location about .6 natuical miles off. So then I downloaded...

    NOAA charts on a Droid?

I found the Navionics for Androd, and downloaded the charts for the midwest. They look fairly complete, and even include charts for the Mississippi, one of my favorite cruise destinations. But how do I get the app to focus on my present location? I'm sure it's something as simple as...

    NOAA charts on a Droid?

I'm pretty sure this has been covered somewhere; I remember seeing it, but can't find it again. I just this morning activated my new HTC Incredible Droid phone with Verizon Wireless, and I'd like to get NOAA charts on it, with an app that doesn't require current phone coverage, so I can see the...

    uBuntu 10

This is an old post that I just saw. I have Ubuntu 10.0.4 on an HP G61, Fedora 13 on a Sony Vaio pcg-v505exp, and Fedora 9 on an old Compaq Presario 8000. I have no computers with Windoze on them.

Anybody Have an Origo Flush Mount Alcohol Stove for Sale?

I had a Wallas and replaced it with an Origo, for the same reason. The Wallas is the greatest thing since sliced bread, as long as it works, but when it doesn't it's a real pain in the posterior. And it always seemed to die on the coldest morning of the year, or when I had steaks in the frying...

    FAVORITE PLACE

Wild Blue, your description makes me wish I'd tried the Arroyo Colorado when I went through that area a few years ago. My favorites are the Upper Mississippi and Florida's St Johns River. Both are scenic in very different ways. There are journals and photos here...

Bilge Pump Not Working on Automatic

When this happened to me when I started removing the old pump to replace it, the brown wire just fell off, and a little green dust spilled out of the insulator. I cut off about an inch, reconnected, and it's worked ever since.

Need Feedback on Rack Idea (photos)

I built a take-apart rack over the cockpit of my 22 Cruiser. It's pretty crude, but it works, and offers some shade from the sun. You can see a photo here: http://smittypaddler.com/cds/cdn/fl10/Jan/d100126.htm

    Moab here we come.

I've been going to Moab to canoe/kayak the Green and Colorado Rivers for 19 years now, and I'm sure it's partly because I'm coming off a week of freeze-dried food, but I almost never fail to stop at Ray's Tavern in Green River for one of the best burger and french fry meals anywhere!
