    Marinaut Shore Power

At my marina the breakers aren't easily accessible (they're under a wooden hatch next to the meter for each boat). The best practice I've heard when not switching power at the pedestal is: Connecting: * make sure boat panel (if applicable) is switched off, or that no load is plugged in on the...

    Marinaut Shore Power

One suggestion (you may already be doing this) is to tie the boat end of your extension cord to the boat! Basically, if the boat comes loose or moves around too much for whatever reason, you want the cord to come loose at the dock, not at the boat, otherwise you can end up with a live cord...

    water leak

Another option (if available) would be to use Rescue Tape. That stuff has a fairly high PSI rating, and can supposedly even be used for hydraulic hose leaks. I bet some other boater out there is carrying it...

    Remove radar arch?

What kind of pedestal is that? I think I'd prefer a short one like what you've got. Did you have to replace the anchor light to mount the radar that far ahead? And is the pedestal base flat? How did you mount it to the curved roof?

    Remove radar arch?

Bob, I agree the discs might look funny, but the idea is the holes will still be there in case we decide we want the arch back on. If we really like having it off, maybe I'll get the holes filled. On the other hand, if I learn to do fiberglass by repairing my own roof it might look a lot more...

    Remove radar arch?

Hi Brent, we're still thinking this one over, and even if I do remove it, I might want to hang on to it in case I change my mind. Of course, it's going to take up a lot of room in my garage so it might go sooner than later. If I do decide to sell it, I'll let you know.

    Remove radar arch?

We've picked a name, but now I have to: a) figure out how to change the boat name on this site and b) order some decals! PS - the name will probably be "Lily Pad"

    Remove radar arch?

Our 2006 22 Cruiser has a low radar arch, and I can tell from measurements that even a small inflatable like the RU260 won't fit on the roof with the arch and the anchor light. Even without the issue of the anchor light, I'd rather be able to shove the dinghy onto the roof from the cockpit than...

    30A shore power install recap

I installed a Guest 2610A 5/5 charger last week as well (pictured in the previous post). I picked that model specifically because it has terminals for all in/out wires. Most chargers under $150 tend to have short cables permanently installed (i.e. 5' AC cable and 5' output lines). This model...

    30A shore power install recap

Last week I installed a galvanic isolator. There a 3 types of isolators (as far as I know): * The cheapest ones are basically 4 diodes, and are completely passive. These aren't up to code since they can quietly fail and open the ground connection to shore with no indication. * More expensive...

    22 backup bilge pump install

I went and looked for ABYC's bilge pump materials and found this: 22.8.9 A check valve may be used only when necessary to prevent an automatic bilge pump from cycling on and off due to back flow from the discharge line. In my case, with a loop of bilge hose above the through hull, enough water...

    Mini Jacker installation (question)

I installed the T-H Marine Mini Jacker on my boat today. I haven't hung the motor yet since I'm giving the sealant a chance to cure first. The wood spacer that comes with it looks like plywood with lots of voids in the layers. I thought it might be cedar plywood since it's untreated, but I...

    Need motorwell boot

My solid one was completely shot (5 year old boat) and there was no way I was going to undo the hydraulic lines to do a non-split boot. The design of the one I have has a good amount of overlap, and indentations for zip ties at different diameters so you can cut it the the right opening size...

    Need motorwell boot

That one doesn't look like it has a split in it so you'd either have to cut it (probably not good), or disconnect all the cables (gas, power, steering) to install it.

    Need motorwell boot

This is the one I got: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009TS3VU The holes lined up on my 22, and the split design lets you install it without disconnecting all the cables.

    Ray Macke's boats and blogs

I think I would have hired someone to do the epoxy coat inside the hull. I'd hate to get done with the boat, find a mysterious leak and think maybe I should have done the epoxy. But I really like the look of that boat!

    22 backup bilge pump install

I had at one point considered the possibility of putting a through hull immediately above the backup pump, in the splash well. This would either shoot out the back of the boat (big drinking fountain), or at least drain out the splash well drain hole. But then I realized the pumps are pretty...
