Remove radar arch?

Our 2006 22 Cruiser has a low radar arch, and I can tell from measurements that even a small inflatable like the RU260 won't fit on the roof with the arch and the anchor light. Even without the issue of the anchor light, I'd rather be able to shove the dinghy onto the roof from the cockpit than try to swing it up from the side of the boat. Also, we don't use the rocket launchers since we don't fish, and there's already a couple rod holders next to the cabin door where we keep the gaff hook.

I've been considering what it would be like to remove the radar arch. I'd probably move the radar to a pedestal up front if I did this. Instead of paying to get the holes repaired, I'd probably use stainless discs with holes to match the arch bases/hole pattern. The arch could be reinstalled later pretty easy. Or I could sell it.

I really like the idea of getting the inflatable (or kayaks) on and off the roof from the cockpit, and I don't really want to invest in switching to a high arch.

Any thoughts?
 
I'd do it. Put the radome on a pedestal forward that will accommodate your anchor light and other things. Free up the entire cabin top aft for the inflatable and other goodies. JMHO.

Oh, and please give your nice boat a name! :lol:

We've picked a name, but now I have to:

a) figure out how to change the boat name on this site

and

b) order some decals!

PS - the name will probably be "Lily Pad"
 
If you remove it how much do you want for it? I am looking for a pole holder/rocket launcher solution for my 2006 22' Angler. I am designing an aluminum rod holder, but would really like a factory type stainless model if possible. A short arch would be great, since it's an Angler I don't plan to try and put a dingy on the roof.

I have a 10 inch pedestal that I had got for the 25 and then sold her before I could mount it. It is available for a reasonable price.
 
If you do remove the arch--be sure that any core of the cabin top is sealed with epoxy. I think that SS discs would look tacky....but that is your decision. It is not that hard to fill the holes and gel coat properly.

As for putting dinghies on the roof--really easy to do from the side, even for us old folks with back problems--we did it with the 9 1/2' air floor which is in the 65 lb range...also done it with Kayaks...It seems more difficult to me from the cockpit--you can go to the bow, and then the cabin top--or directly up to the top from the sides.

Hi Brent, we're still thinking this one over, and even if I do remove it, I might want to hang on to it in case I change my mind. Of course, it's going to take up a lot of room in my garage so it might go sooner than later. If I do decide to sell it, I'll let you know.

Bob, I agree the discs might look funny, but the idea is the holes will still be there in case we decide we want the arch back on. If we really like having it off, maybe I'll get the holes filled.

On the other hand, if I learn to do fiberglass by repairing my own roof it might look a lot more tacky than a couple of stainless discs!

Bob, I agree the discs might look funny, but the idea is the holes will still be there in case we decide we want the arch back on. If we really like having it off, maybe I'll get the holes filled.

On the other hand, if I learn to do fiberglass by repairing my own roof it might look a lot more tacky than a couple of stainless discs! And based on quotes I've had for filling transom holes, it'll probably cost $400 to get the roof holes filled at a local shop.

What kind of pedestal is that? I think I'd prefer a short one like what you've got. Did you have to replace the anchor light to mount the radar that far ahead? And is the pedestal base flat? How did you mount it to the curved roof?

It doesn't sound like your going to sell the arch very soon, so I'll proceed with the aluminum arch and rocket launchers for the Fall. Let me know if you do decide to sell.

Here is a pic of Islander with a radar on a front mount. I put a radar on a mount like this on my 24' TomCat, but I can't find a pic to post. Scan Strut makes some nice mounts, that's what I used.

The strut is a "ScanStrut" about 5-6 inch high. It was up there when I got the boat. I don't believe there is a curve there. It ispretty close to flat, there may be some sort of a gasket there. I will have to take it off this fall, and get the strut re powder coated, unless Scanstrut wnat to replace it. The coating is peeling up off the top of the base around the corners. I would be tempted to replace it with an 8" one so I could get a radar reflector mounted in under the dome.

The anchor light worked fine the way it was from the factory, but I did recently replace it when I converted to LED and also need to add some height. The new Perko plugs into the same base, but is lighter and another foot taller (so that it shines over the inflatable) when I have it there.
