Can someone take me for a ride, please?

Dear CH: I'd be happy to take you for a spin. But I have serviced and winterized the CD and put it away for the winter. I have the boat stored halfway between Rochester and Buffalo on L. Ontario. I usually put into Lake at Golden Hill SP (which you can find on a map of NY). If you don't...

    Locking Through Canals ... Solo

Here's what I have learned and do... 1. Get ready, before you GO! I set lines at all four corners and hang fenders on both sides. I run the front lines back to the cockpit. 2. Coming into the lock, I try to grab a fixed line or bollard (rather then a hanging rope). 4. I wrap the line...

    gear Oil

I changed out my gear oil yesterday. For the first time, I used a "pump" (which I just purchased) instead of the squeeze bottle> What a difference: well worth $14!

    Launching without a loading dock

Good question. I too will be watching for tips from "experienced" boaters.

SNICKERS - Morning, Noon and Night!

Dun: Sorry we will miss you, as you cruise through our area. Currently, we are Seattle. We fly home to Rochester on Tuesday. But we have a short turn-around, and leave in our RV for Indiana on Wednesday. Wayne

SNICKERS - Morning, Noon and Night!

Jim: If/when you run the Canal to Buffalo, let us know. We have a home less than 10 miles south of Spencerport, and a cottage 10 miles north of Middleport. In August, we met up with the C-Brats traveling the Canal from Geneva to Tonawanda, and joined them for dinner in Middleport. We "moor"...

    Mounting boat hook holder

Like Captain's Choice, I have a pair of telescoping boat hooks that I simply lay on the inside of the grabrails on the top of the cabin. No hooks are needed. They can be easily accessed, and yet are out-of-the-way (taking up no room in the cockpit).

    Questions re hot surge brakes

Harper: I just did a search on-line using "surge brakes disengage" and found several good discussions and suggestions. Essentially, one has to prevent the trailer tongue (a more accurate word than "hitch"!) from sliding foward. Apparently, some surge brakes come with a "key" to put into a...

    Questions re hot surge brakes

Harper: I believe that there is a way to keep a surge hitch from surging. I recall reading about this both in a magazine article and possibly somewhere on this site (?). The solution is a mechanical "fix" which prevents the surge hitch from moving forward and engaging the brakes. Wayne

    cleats,fenders and tying up

Like others, I did not see this thread earlier...so please allow me to add my four cents worth now. 1. As regards the height of fender placement, I find it varies, depending on the height of the dock. Sometimes, I need to raise them as high as possible on the cleats, even though they don't...

    08/8 – 08/15 - Western Erie Canal Cruise

We wish the "flotilla" a good last day on the Canal, and Valkryie a pleasant cruise back to Geneva. We enjoyed dinner with you at the Basket Factory in Middleport. Wayne and Darlene

    08/8 – 08/15 - Western Erie Canal Cruise

Nick: On your return, I recommend an overnight in Lockport at the "Widewaters marina." It's a quiet place, with a nice canalside park, and lots of (usually empty) slips: the first four nights are free. There is a museum tour of the locks in Lockport. I also recommend an overnight in the...

    08/8 – 08/15 - Western Erie Canal Cruise

Notes to the "flotilla": 1. The lift bridge at Gasport was closed, but it is now open again. 2. The code for the restrooms at Medina is 43152. Wayne

    08/8 – 08/15 - Western Erie Canal Cruise

We are montioring your progress with interest. (Our home is located ca. 10 miles straight south of Spencerport, and our cottage on L. Ontario straight north of Middleport.) What time do you expect to arrive in Medina Wednesday afternoon/evening? (We are taking another non-boating couple out...

    08/8 – 08/15 - Western Erie Canal Cruise

Dear Rick: I (and perhaps other lurkers) would like to know your planned schedule for the cruise...thinking I may be able to meet up with you at some point along the way. Also, will you posting to this site daily reports on your progress? Thanks, Wayne PS: Yesterday, we ran from Lockport to...

    C-dory 22 cruiser cabin size

We converted our dinette into a settee. It seats three adults comfortably. We also have four canvas chairs for the cockpit. So we can seat four (including the captain) either in the cabin or in the cockpit. Our conversion also allows us to sleep four in the cabin. See photos in album.

A question for you 22' owners

I can't really compare the two, since I have never owned a 25' CD. But I love the 22'. I can easily launch and retrieve it by myself, and it is easy to handle in the water as well.

    08/8 – 08/15 - Western Erie Canal Cruise

We live 10 miles from the Erie Canal; it is one of our favorite boating waters. May I presume to offer y'all a few suggestions? 1. Before launching into the Canal, I hang fenders along BOTH sides of the boat. I made up 4' long fender boards (see photos), which I mount just below the rubrail...
