Cell Phone Coverage US San Juans & Canadian Gulf Islands

AT&T works well for us in the San Juans and Gulf Islands. Also most locations up as far as Port Hardy. On the BC north coast there are remote locations where no service is available. AT&T coverage in many parts of SE Alaska is good, in some places much better than Verizon's.

    Boat log

We have a paper log book for recording each day's travel, partly because that's how we did things years ago before we had a computer onboard. We use Word for a journal, sometimes only a line per day, but sometimes several paragraphs. I use Excel to keep track of spare parts, including part...

    These are trailerable boats!

Hi Colby, I used to do 4,000 per year, up to Prince Rupert and back home to Utah.

    AK inside passage cruise guide

Thanks for the kind words, Jay and Colby! Hi Stephan, If you like I could email you lists of anchorages we have considered or used. One winter years ago, we sat down with the guides and paper charts, and started to build lists of anchorages we thought would work for us in our CD22. By now...

    Retrieving a stuck anchor

I'd use the zip tie method only for fishing or a lunch anchor, not for overnight. A method I've used a couple of times is to shackle an ~18" loop of chain around the anchor line, tie a light (1/4"?) line onto the shackle, and let the loop slide down the taut anchor line and onto the anchor...

    Alternatives to C-Dory

Hi Nate, You didn't say whether you're interested in multi-day cruising with cooking eating sleeping etc facilities (our idea of an adventure boat). If so, in a light weight but capable cruiser, it's hard to beat a 22 or 23 C-Dory. We had a CD-22 for 7 years, cruising big western lakes, the...

    Prince Rupert launching/parking

You might try Bridgeview Marine in Prince Rupert. Their website mentions boat storage. https://bridgeviewmarine.com/boat-storage/

Trailering long distance advice 16' Angler

Make sure the tires are pumped to their max pressure rating. Jack up the trailer, one side at a time, enough to be able to spin the wheel in both directions. Listen/feel for anything other than smooth quiet and easy rotation. If there's any more than a very little bit of binding, the brakes...

    Canadian Boarder opens April 1st

I used ArriveCAN heading north last April, and heading south in August. Only thing tricky about it was that it asked for an address where I was going in BC. CBSA folks told me to enter the address of the marina where I was going to check into BC. I submitted my info shortly before entering...

    Transiting BC, WA-AK

Don't know for sure. I have not yet been able to find updated info for private boaters. In the past it has always come out later than the info for land and air travelers. If it is like last fall, if you're vaccinated and have proof of an accepted negative test, once you check in you're OK to...

mounting Scotty 2500 prawn /crab trap puller on a 22 cruise

In our primary cruising areas of BC and SEAK, the best shrimping locations we've found are tucked away from big open water, where there is some current but not a great deal, and not so many predators. We weight lightweight stackable pots with 12lb of lead. Staying in WA waters in 2020, our...

How much fuel capacity for exploring Inside Passage?

FWIW: Inside Passage – Distance between fuel stops We've wandered pretty much all over the Inside Passage in BC and SE Alaska, in all sorts of different directions. Distances are from tested routes in my chartplotters. They're in Nautical Miles. To convert NM to statute miles, multiply by...

    Cell Carriers or Service

Hi Colby, I just switched to the AT&T Unlimited Extra plan. Works well for me, providing essentially unlimited (for my needs) data and hotspot in SE AK, where WiFi is mostly unavailable. I'm about to head south through BC, where it provides unlimited talk text and data as well.

    Intuition to Alaska - 2021

Hi Les, Our favorite stops in Chatham would be Pavlof Harbor in Freshwater Bay, Takatz Bay, Warm Springs Bay (try for a spot on the float, and hike up to the warm pools and lake), Red Bluff Bay, and Gut Bay. All along Baranof Island the mountains are magnificent. From Chatham take Frederick...
