Hello all,

We have a 2006 22' Cruiser with trim tabs now powered by a new Yamaha 100 (great motor BTW) and have always had issues with "sliding or skidding" off the crest or slope of a wave so I'm looking at ADD-ON accessories to improve its performance...
  1. Has anyone added a PERMATRIM to their outboard motor and is it helpful?
  2. Has anyone added a HYDRO-SHIELD to their outboard motor and is it helpful?
  3. Does anyone have a better fix, solution or suggestion?
Thanks!

I don't know about the sliding or skidding, but I have put Permatrims on both my earlier 22, and now on my 25. And it does make a big difference in boat trim and with cavitation. I don't know if I've ever experienced the sliding that you are talking about. I was in a lot of 2-4' waves in the PNW earlier this summer, and routinely see those kind of square waves in the Great Lakes. Colby

I have run Permatrim and trim tabs on most of my C Dorys. On the 22 with a 90 hp, it lowers the planing speed, It gives a little more stability.

Driving on the back of waves (don’t do the front--too much chance of uncontroled broach.) I find having the Permatrim, allows you to pick your speed lower than without it, and continue to ride the back of a wave.

If you were to come down the face (depends on the size and steepness (period) of the wave, the Permatrim would help. But again, skill in driving and using tabs are important here.

Not sure what you mean by "sliding or skidding". C-Dorys can bow steer if you get the bow too deep going down a wave. In rough water, you have balance getting the bow down for better penetration of the waves against the bow steering when you get to the trough. The biggest help is to slow down. A C-Dory rides like a cork, it wants to go up and over a wave rather than through it. There can be some corkscrew motion as the wave lifts the bow and then the stern when taking waves at an angle.
Trim tabs or a Permatrim are a good addition to any C-Dory. Trim tabs add lateral control along with pitch control that a Permatrim cannot. Permatrim mounts farther aft so it has a mechanical advantage over trim tabs.
