yellow streaks from rub rail

We have some new yellow streaks coming down from the rub rail, which aren't coming off with soap. Could this be from adhesive, and how do we clean it off our hull? Would a thin bead of sealant under the rub rail keep this from oozing down? What should we use? Appreciate any suggestions.

Taran-

First thing I would do is find out if it will clean off with a hotter solvent!

1. Try oil based paint thinner, and if that doesn't work....

2. Try either Goo-Gone, or my favorite, lacquer thinner.

It will probably need #2, if it's an adhesive (really a sealer).

Clean it off, re-wax, and see if it recurs.

If it does, you might try to seal it, as you've suggested. However, flexing of the rail and hull may break the seal eventually, and you may have to choose between

A.) periodic cleaning re-sealing, and waxing, or

B.) Removing the rub rail, cleaning the sealant off, and using another sealant.

If while employing alternative B, you can change over from rivets to stainless steel machine screws, fender washers, and Nylock nuts. There are several discussions about this on earlier threads.

Good Luck!

Taran,

For removal of the streaks, one thing that worked for me was when I used rubbing compound to try to remove some scratches. It worked well on our yellowish-brown streaks from the rubrail.

It really helps when taking a leak over the side to not pee on it from my own personal experience. It never has really been a problem though, and I am little surprised it doesn't come right off, perhaps a trip to the doctor is in order? :teeth

T.R. as we say in the Navy, either stand closer to the fire or reel our more hose... :cry

Man, that water is deep and cold..... Then we all agree; it helps not to pee on it :)[/i]

There were these two fellars pissin' over the the side of a C-Dory.

One fellar said, "The water's cold"....

and the other fellar said, "The water's deep".
