yamaha gas gauges

I have a 06 cape cruiser with gauges from yamaha the fuel gauge has fuel ,voltage ,and time
The fuel gauge (twin switch) shows 7 notches when full 30 gallons ea. tank total 60 gallons ,now the fun part when the navman shows I still have 32 gallons in the two tanks the tanks show only 1 notch each I also use the GPS miles traveled When I fill up both tanks the navman is very accurate to within a gallon or so Also the gas pickups are forward in the 60 gallon aluminum tanks So unless you are going slow and are using trim on eng and tabs you are not using all the 60 gallons of fuel

Does anyone have similar problem with yamaha gauges
 
On my Whaler I have a 91 gallon tank. The Yamaha gauge reads full when it is full, but reads empty (blinking last bar) when I have about 45-50 gallons on board. So I don't think you are alone in having an essentially worthless Yamaha fuel gauge.
 
Well that makes me feel better im not alone What do you think we can do to recalibrate the fuel gauge any suggestions for yamha gauges

we need some mechanical types to chime in here
 
I don't really have any good ideas of what can be done about it. Perhaps a call to your local Yamaha dealer could generate some ideas. I've never really worried about it. I just note the hours I've run since last fill and multiply by 12 (that's what I burn, the CD is way less). This has worked well, and I've never even come close to running out of gas. The longest run I've done in a day in that boat was Mercer Island to Roche Harbor and I recall burning somewhere around 50 gallons. With a fuel flow meter I don't really see why the Yamaha gauge would matter.

This is one of the reasons I really like the translucent tanks on the CD22. It's easy to see at a glance how much fuel is aboard.
 
yes I like the translucent gas tanks also I thought about converting mine in fact a nice single 30 gallon translucnet would make a lot of sence but I would be afraid of ethenal eating through it ? I use the navman and the GPs to keep track of mileage I use about 4mpg and then can figure out when I need to gas up with 60 gallons it would be hard to run out of fuel
 
I suspect that boat gas tanks are not baffled, like auto/truck tanks. If this is so, the gas gauges are probably only useful at rest. I rely on my Yamaha fuel meters (same idea as Navman) and reset them whenever I fill my tanks. When I have used 75 gallons (the meters record total usage, not individual motor usage, unfortunately) I know I have to turn around as I have 150 gallons total capacity. Actually, I usually start looking for more gas after burning 50 gallons, following the rule of 1/3 to go, 1/3 to return, and 1/3 for emergency, etc. I use the gas gauges primarily to keep an eye on the relative full/empty status of both tanks.

I also had the worthless yamaha gas gauge on my 06 cc. One of the 1st things I did is install 2 mechanical gauges hooked up to the original sending units. It is fairly accurate when the boat is level and I like being able to see the fuel level in both tanks at same time ( no fuel gauge selecter switch ) You can see the gauges in the upper right of the helm pic. in my album.
 
I talked to the yamaha dealer I have digital gauges with switch he suggested put in bigger sending unit or bending the sending unit's arm or live with it .
I've done what Warren has suggested I just reset the Navan when it reaches down to 25 gallons or so just put in another 10 gallons also reset my GPS miles traveled when I reach 200 miles start looking for gas
So far we only use it for day trips so no problem I've never burned more then 10 gallons in a day ever . That f-115 is unbelievable fuel mileage
The only time I would ever need to know exactly what I have is taking a long trip then I probably will change over to other gauges
 
Boaterbob, THIS is what my gas gauges look like (Square Speedometer). Is it the same as yours? Notice that it shows the two tanks separately. I think it is fairly accurate at rest.

Warren I have the round ones it tells fuel , battery voltage, timerunning , and speed if tube is hooked up which it isn't.
I use the GPS for speed
 
I was going to mention that when wire properly it will show both tanks seperately with no need for the switch. Also sending unit issues play a huge role in how any of these gauges perform.

And larger marine tanks are baffled, but this size may not be.

Also, the new ploy tanks aren't affected by ethonal, unlike the older fiberglass tanks.
 
My boat came with the round yamaha gauges and the 2 fuel tanks were wired thru a selecter switch. I have noticed my trim indicator now also is not as accurate as it used to be.

I had that problem too and the folks at Wefings told me it was a sensor on the motor that was in the process of going south. They did not have a replacement in stock or they would have fixed it then.
