Any Brats have a 12 pound downrigger weight mould they no longer use? I have a lot of surplus lead shot I need to put to use. I would like to buy one for cash and the cost of shipping.
Thanks Wapiti!

I guess I'm going to have to make my own downrigger mould from green sand. Any have any experience casting downrigger balls in a green sand mould?

Larry;
I seen some of the moulds offered by mostly US suppliers, the cost to ship to Canada is outrageous. Just not prepared to spend in excess of $150 for a mould and shipping.
Thanks Wapiti.

is it really economical to make your own? I looked at it briefly and it seemed like the cost of lead (and shipping) made it no less expensive for me at the time.

It may not be economical if you have to buy the lead. In my case I have over 100 lbs of lead shot which is now illegal to use. A 12 lb downrigger ball costs me $45 to buy. So if I recycle my useless lead shot I think it makes sense for any one who has access to almost free lead to pour their own weights.

I have now made a green sand mould and am waiting for it to dry. When I get a finished 12 lb ball I will post a pic of it.

I make my own balls all the time and if you have a cheap or free source of lead its easy to do as long as you are careful. I wish you lived closer. I would let you borrow my 12 lbs mold in exchange for some finished ball. But its to far to ship then back to me. shot if the perfect thing to melt.

Well I poured another 12 lb. lead ball today. See my album for photos of the green sand mould I used and the final product ready for plastic coating. As mentioned in the previous post be careful with hot lead. I wear a respirator, leather gloves an apron and eye protection when working with hot lead.
Thanks for the offer Starcraftom, but as you mention distance would be a limiting factor in working out an exchange. I now have two 12 pounders poured and if I get another two done I will be in good shape.
