Hey Dwight, Are you taking the Tsawwassen ferry on the oversize discount schedule? And, how about a route and road report. Are you launching at Port Alice? On my way back from Telegraph Cove I overnighted just below CR Storage. Great place to park, quiet ontil 0730, and the perfect sloop to drain and dry the boat.

Have a great trip, stay safe and do catching

Quatsino looks fairly wide open for fishing this year. I was just looking at Kyuquot Sound in preparation for going up there in a few days and the BC fishing closures are all over the place. Huge areas closed to "fin fish" i.e. fish. Some salmon "no retention" areas. Rockfish closures here and there, but basically in all the remote backwater areas, which is where I generally catch my dinner and spend the night.

Navigating through the maze of islets will be easy in comparison to determining whether fishing (and for what) is allowed there.

Weather looks like it's going to be pretty nice for the trip. Wednesday and Thursday the ocean is going to be really flat outside Quatsino Sound, but it's going to be a little windy.

Looking forward to the reports.

Looks like some good groceries. Are those yelloweye rockfish in that third pic?

What was your total take home for the trip? I'm debating visiting Winter Harbor vice Nootka one year.

C-Dog - my boat concentrated on Springs and Silvers - we limited there. The other 19 concentrated on bottom fish. They came very close to limiting on bottom.

Silvers were very big this year, the Springs were on the small side.

The 16 did well with all finfish.

Those were Vermillion. Yellow Eye and Boccacio are now closed (probably forever)

Thanks for the info.

We noticed, too, that the Coho were big this year. Considering the eggs of the hens were pretty undeveloped, they were probably gonna grow another 4 or 5 pounds before maturing, so they're gonna be really big when they get to the terminal fishery.

On average, the Springs around Nootka were smaller, too. There were a few in the upper 20s, and only one in the 30s that I heard of; most were in the mid to high teens.

I wish we'd found more bottom fish, maybe Winter Harbor is a better bet for that.

Very impressive Dwight, Tom and company! Sounds like an epic adventure. I guess we went to WH 2 years too early but hey, that's fishing.

Way to go!

I have to say that the trip was a blast. In the first 450 mins of fishing we caught 2 20lbers and two 18 lbs kings. we caught several coho from 12 to 15 lbs and threw back more 13 lbs kings then I have caught in the Puget sound in the last 3 years. and we did not even fish off shore. all of the salmon were caught in 50 to 60 feet of water close to walls. Rock fishing was good but bumpy on the out side. I wanted to ling fish with sand dabs but we could not find amy the right size. If you go to small you end up with lots of undersized rock fish. We did hook 4 cabezons in 15 mins on one spot and all the vermilion in 20 mins in another spot.

The area is gorgeous. Sun and fog and mountains. we say eagles, sea otters, bears, ocean sunfish, dolphins etc etc. It was really a great time. I wish I had brought my camera. I did shot some go pro video but have not looked at it yet. I will try to post something soon.

The docks and marina are rustic but well maintained at the same time. Its not first class but it has everything you need. It also is not over regulated or controlled like a Friday harbor. More of a feel that you are on your friends dock. The store up the hill has what you need but not what you want so you need to come well equip ted.

I rode with the truck on the way out on the dirt road. Very nice smooth road for a dirt logging road. i would not hesitate to drive my camper/ truck out there . In fact I would even tow my boat out that road as I saw it. this is something that changes every season or even with in the season depending on rain. I have towed campers and camp trailers and even boats over far worse roads , both paved and dirt, to fish and camp before. I would schedule it for a weekend when the logging trucks are not working. We left on a early Thursday and the logging trucks were hauling ass in big way. You got to get over fast.

thank you Dwight for asking me to go and Susan is already asking about going next year.

Sounds like you all had a great time, and fishing was also catching. Tom, Thanks for the work on the road, I have been wondering about that. About how many miles of dirt/gravel road?
