winter fitness

the dark rainy season is coming and I thought it might not be a bad idea to get one of those new fangled fitness games. Does anybody know anything about Wii's, ps3's or whatever they're called? Plain old exercise is just to boring for me to do regularly and I'm thinking this might be a good indoor way of doing something

We have a Wii. Sure sounds funny when said that way...

Got it mostly for the grandkiddos, they use it a lot when here. Have not gotten the exercise thingy with it, they get enough waving stuff around and I usually exercise my right arm by hoisting an adult beverage or two while watching them have fun. Now my right arm is a lot stronger than the left one. I think this winter, I'm going to have to shift my habits to strengthen the other one... :disgust

The exercise thing looks neat, as long as someone else doesn't see you using it, you should be OK..

We have a Wii and I have Wii fitness and the EA Sports programs. You can get a really good workout with either but the EA Sports program is probably a little more hardcore. HOWEVER, no exercise equipment/programs/DVD's are useful unless YOU actually use them. There are some pieces of exercise equipment that we've purchased in the past that I swear I've gotten more exercise moving that crap around than either myself or Joyce got actually using the piece of equipment.

IMHO, if you want to get/stay fit, the best thing you can do is to create a local "support" group of like minded friends/family who get out and exercise with you. The extra motivation that you get from having others who expect you to exercise is a real help. Also, it's been shown that a lot of habits are "contagious". E.g. healthy people tend to hang around with healthy people and obese people tend to hang around other obese people. So obesity is contagious. Happiness also appears to be contagious.

So if you want to be skinny and happy, hang out with happy skinny people. If you want to exercise more, hang out with people who exercise regularly.

Well, I joined a health club located about 5 minutes from home. It opens at 5:30 AM. I arrive at about 5:35. I start with some squats, one foot balancing and light free weights. Then I work out on about 8 or 10 machines, alternating between upper and lower body machines. After that some aerobics and finish up with a mile on the treadmill. All the while listening to CarTalk, FreshAir, or music on the Ipod. The whole thing takes about an hour and a half. After a few months of doing this five or six times a week I have lost weight and feel great, physically, of course. But the improvement in my mental outlook, my attitude, has been both unexpected and nothing less than phenomenal.

Ken-
Buy a base ball bat (it's a lot cheaper) and have one of the kids or M. sneak up behind you and start swinging. This will give you all quickness and agility that your looking for and raise your heart beat for hours at a time with out a costly gym membership or another dust collector at the house.

Marty,

Thanks for the enlightenment and inspiration  I see now that gym membership isn't enough, apparently you actually have to go there!

Roger- I could go on and on, but it's all explained in Article 9, Section 4b.

Ken, if you're going to play with a Wii you better get two of them. Better in lots of ways.

I think RB's idea of hanging around like minded people is the best one. Come on over and we'll have a beer or three and hang out with some other old fat guys.

Or maybe Marty and I should invite both of you out for a weekend hike, bike or run.

This is what most people miss when compiling the reasons to exercise - by the far the most important to me.

Nothing less than phenomenal is exactly how I feel after a run/bike/swim/etc.

How many years did you go to school, Doctor?
Quite awhile Mike so I know a "teachable moment" when I see one. So, let me put things a few other ways....

1) The more you exercise, especially vigorous aerobic exercise, the more you can eat and drink without gaining weight. For me, one reason to exercise is that I get to eat more.

2) The more you exercise, especially vigorous aerobic exercise, the longer you are likely to live. This increases the total amount of time you get to eat and drink.

3) The more you exercise, especially vigorous aerobic exercise, the longer you are likely to live. This increases the total amount of time you'll have to spend with those two wonderful girls you are so lovingly raising (although since they are in their teens, they may not seem so wonderful every day but I know you love them anyway).

So in the long run, you'll get to do more of the things you love if you exercise more.

For us, walking is our daily exercise. We live on the edge of a beautiful lake, with a one-mile (paved) trail around the lake, and it is a county park full of fall-color trees, geese and ducks on the water, and kids playing in the kiddie park. We can't think of a single darn excuse why we shouldn't walk every day (they plow the walk in winter, we have more hours of sunshine than Tucson, ... simply no excuse) -- and we love the quiet time together to chat (kids and grandkids even join us oftentimes)

Find a beautiful walk, we suggest, and stroll along. A brisk walk (our heart doc says) is the best exercise we could do.
