Winter Blackmouth Hot!!

I lost a dandy today but ended up with a decent fish. (last 3 pics in the fishing album). The guy I took out lost two fish, one close to the boat and one deep. The bite was on for about an hour and really shut off after that.

I saw two other C-dorys out there, a 16' and a 22' angler that I haven't seen around before. Was anyone fishing P.A. this weekend?

Thanks Tim. Today I tried out the hydraulic steering for the first time and really like it. I forgot to ask Les about the auto pilot so I'll have to deal with that down the road.

Left Everett at 6:30 this morning and headed to Double Bluff. Got our lines in the water about 7:15 and had our limits of two fish a little before 8 am. The fish were about 6 and 8 pounds. It was a good day!, and the water water was flat. Seen Susan E leaving the 10th street launch when we arrived. Tom, did you have any luck?
I will be fishing the Anacortes derby next weekend, any other C-Brats entered into the derby?
Jim

susan and I should have listened to jim. We had already planned to fish near langley and parts north. The biggest fish have been coming from that area. After the slack tide we planned to head to langley for alate lunch and then home. Well the dam wallas would not light again and susan got so cold we skipped langley and just went home about 4pm. The fishing was slow with only 4 shackers released. talked to the checkers and at 4pm they had 28 fish for 45 boats. the most fish came from possession bar but the biggest fish all came from elger bay and baby island. 13 and 12 lbs.

Sark,
We were fishing a plug on one pole and a coyote 3 1/2" (frog racer) on the other about 38" back of a gibbs purple haze flasher with a purple stripe, with some scent. We had a double with the first hook up with the the fish on the plug just under size. The coyote rig caught both keeper fish. Hope that helps you. If you are not bouncing the bottom at times then your not fishing deep enough. We were fishing between 85 and 120 feet. A fiend of mine was fishing outer possesion bar when I gave him a call to come on over. Below is his e-mail that he sent Sunday evening.
Good luck, Jim

Hi Jim,
Just wanted to say thanks again for the hot tip on the Blackmouth this morning.
Scott and I had great success right around the tide change. Scott caught 4 salmon with the Yellowtail spoon, one 5# keeper and I finally put on the "hot" Yellowtail spoon on. Ten minutes later had a nice 6# fish in the boat. Both healthy hatchery fish, mine had a nose tag so mine looked kind of funny when I filleted it! We got all the fish out in the 110-140 foot range of depth and we were as close to the bottom as possible. We also saw 4 others caught out in the same general vicinity. We were east of the that big cut in the bluff.

Peter,
Glad to hear you are in the derby. I have a slip reserved but need to call and get my slip number, probably tomorrow. There will be another 22' blue C-Dory entered also, no name on his boat. I will be arriving sometime Friday morning and probably go out and look for some fish, maybe dinner to.
See you up there!
Jim

Jim, i was just looking around your album and saw that big home made smoker you got. can you post some pics of that from another angle or just show where the fire box is. I would realy like to see it up close if I can come over to see it some time. this is a pink year and the liitle chief is just not up to the job.

Tom,
The smoker is made of 3/4" plywood and is 48" X 36" X 48" high and breaks down so it can be stored. I had obtained three stainless 1 1/2" angle frames with stainless steel expanded metal mesh some time ago, so I built the smokehouse to fit these. I use the bottom section of a brinkman electric smoker for a heat sorce and use chunks of green alter wood. I can smoke about 100 lbs of king slabs in about 7 to 8 hours. I have had about 20 humpys halfed in this unit and sure saves a lot of time getting them smoked. The racks are the most expensive thing if a guy would have to make them. If you would like to see let me know. I live in Everett, not far from Forest Park off of Mukilteo Blvd.

Chromer nice fish. I was on point no point on saturday with peter from c-dancer. The weather blow up for a while and got a little bumpy. We were fishing the PSA edmonds black mouth derby that had been postponed from last month due to weather. the days catch was not that good. of the 80 people with tickets I think 20 fish where weighted in. Some of these guys will not keep small fish so more were caught but not kept or weighted in. The winning fish was only 6 lbs 12 oz and was good for $750 my 6 lb 5 oz fish netted me and peter $250 at fourth place. I took the mystery fish prize instead of fourth because I was closest and it was more then the 4th place prize. All in all an good day. peter lost a just legal fish at the boat and I lost a big fish, 15 lbs, when it ran away and then turned 180 and ran at me faster then I can reel. good day on the water.

Chromer,

I saw you out there today at Point No Point - nice fish. We also picked up two legal fish - not quite as big as yours though - we had one at 24-25" and another a little over 23". Both hatchery fish, both quite red when filleted. Nice work on yours!

Trolling, the largest fish at ebb. More fish takes on flood tide, but smaller. It sure felt good to be back out there. I havent been in the Sound since October.

Rogerbum in the blue 22?

Yep - was in the blue 22 with no name on the side and the cutting board table on the transom. There was another blue 22 with no-name down at Pilot point. That one appeared to be a bit newer - he was right along side when we got our first fish, don't know who that was.

Tom, thanks again for the great day on the water. I'm still mad about "crackering" that fish caught so early in the day. I guess you can say it's always interesting with me on the boat, what with tangling downrigger lines and the like

Way to go Roger. You're the man, like you always say, you always catch fish.

Nice fish Chromer, looks like the fish Tom lost. Oh well, there's always next time, right? Since the season's been so good this year, it looks like I may get another chance at losing, I mean catching a blackmouth this year. :thup

Peter
