Which motor size?

In considering a C-Dory 16 Cruiser purchase, should one consider the 40 or the 50 hp outboard? The boat will be used on inland waterways and have 2 (occasionally 3-4) people aboard. Thanks!
 
If buying new, I woudl seriously consider the 50. Not much more money at time of purchase. An extra $600 to $1000 is not much considering the cost of the boat.

Unless the 40 is significantly lighter than the 50, which in some motor lines it is a bigger block (like Yamaha).

If buying used, you have to take what you can find, and then condition is more important than whether it's a 40 or 50.

I'll let Matt answer for himself, of course, but that's the first thing I thought of when you said you'd occasionally have 3-4 persons on board!

I'd go for the 50 anyways, as most of our members with 16's have said in previous discussions that they would prefer a 50 when things load up onboard.

And, if those are 3-4 older folks, who are likely to weigh a bit more than 20 year olds, well ............................! :lol:

If the three or four people using the boat are super models, the forty will be fine. If they will be guys sized like me, the fifty might be nice.

The performance difference probably won't be huge, but it's frustrating for an owner to wish a year after he bought a boat that he had gotten the 50. It's an expensive upgrade at that point.

That being said, there are tons of 16's with 40's on them, so it wouldn't be a deal breaker in my book.
 
For the 16, I would definately say the 50, especially if you are having the heavier load. The Honda and Yahama 40 and 50 are on the same size block, so the same weight. Suzuki the 40 is on a slightly smaller block, and the weight is about 40 lbs less. Price differential is usually less than $1000--closer to $800.
 
Actually Yamaha 50 and 60 share a block, the 40 is smaller (and lighter). The new Suzuki 40 and 50 are based on the succesful DF60 that came out two years ago, and is lightweight and a good runner.
 
I've had a 22 footer with a 70hp and a 16 footer with a 40 hp. I was happy in every respect with both motors. Dotty and I are both, well, heavy. We never ever felt either motor was straining while cruising along between 20 and 25 mph, as fast as we felt comfortable. Just my opinion.
 
Have read on the Honda's the torque is the same on both the 40 & 50hp with the ability of the 50 hp to increase rpm to make the extra 10 hp.
 
I have a 16, not a cruiser, but I have the 50. I had twin 40s on my 22. m
Go with the 50.
