What's this?

Without disrupting the thread where Seabran Steve shared his fantastic pictures, and without horking one of his pics from his own site, I need to ask what the black flipper looking gizmo is on the side of the CG cutter. I am certain it isn't a wind-up device.

You can see it clearly in this pic. A later picture shows another one of the things on the port side.

It's the engine exhaust hole. They paint the side black flared to the stern to help hide the black diesel soot on the side of the cutter.

Now Ken be nice... :disgust
We all know Mike is smarter than that.....and had the vision as to buy a truck that matched.

They used to do the same thing behind the old prop engines so you couldn't see the oil running back over the wing. Jets suck oil leaks into the engine so all they do is smoke a little more. :xseek

This is one of the 87 foot Marine protector class cutters which:"employs an innovative stern launch and recovery system using an Aluminum hulled inboard diesel powered waterjet small boat" (called the "short range prosecutor".) I have seen some of these cutters carry RIB's also. This boarding ramp involves an opening transom, and is another reason for the side exhausts, instead of the usual transom exhuasts. They have a max speed of 25 knots and a max range of about 900 miles. I believe that the engines are 1500 hp MTU diesels.
