What's in a name

What are the thoughts on renaming a boat that you purchase used that already has a name? I think it is a bad idea, being a bit superstitious, however some of my "passengers" want me to rename it something particular to us.

Out here in the PNW we regularly do both at CBGT's. We have a semi formal ceremony involving libations, greenery, the reading of the appropriate words by either the "Rev" Jim or the "Rev" Dave. All goes well, a good time is had and Neptune seems appeased. Go for it. Choose your own name.

Come on, the old superstition of changing the name on your boat goes back to the day when seafarers thought the earth was flat; I wouldn’t give a second thought.
But don’t bring bananas on my boat or whistle in the wheelhouse, I’ll have yea keelhauled! :D

There are both "denaming" ceremonies, which will take away any bad karma associated with the change  and "naming" ceremonies. I'll try to find them for you...

Here they are! :thup

DENAMING

DENAMING AND RENAMING

Small world! The denaming ceremony described by author John Vigor mentions a Santana 22 named Zephyr. We sold Zephyr to him in '94.
John has lived an eventful life. His escape from South Africa is a facinating story.

I think it depends on your tone of voice.....ask my wife....

Boy are you right! :thup Sally can hear inflections in my voice that must mean terrible things because they sure get me in trouble without even knowing why!

I "heard it" in the typing above and BOY are you in trouble now!

Isn't "trouble" why we have boats with berths?

Thanks for the info on the renaming ceremonies. That should appease the gods should I do this. Of course with my luck, someone will whistle and bring a banana.

 When I frequently fished with my neighbor back home I learned that first hand. Don't forget the tuna sandwiches too. BAD juju...especially when you're trying to catch Ahi.
