When I bought Tortuga del Mar, it had the item shown in my album in a box. The previous owner does not know what it is either. It has a crank that rotates only about 270 degrees and does not appear to do anything.

Does anyone have any idea what this thing is and what it is used for?

Thanks!

Terry

Oh goodie! A puzzle. Is it hollow, is it plastic? Which parts rotate and what plane do they rotate in?

That looks a bit like the fitting that comes with some porta-pottis that optionally lets you plumb a vent and a pump out. If so, I think one end would fit into the potti, one would go to a deck pump out, and the third would go to a vent fitting. Perhaps it rotates so you have some adjustment as to angle, etc.

It is hollow and is plastic. I can look down through it and the crank does not do anything that I can see.

It looks like a crank and holder for a large umbrella, perhaps a patio size.

It is probably a left handed whim-wham for grinding smoke.

Do the two tubes rotate, or is that not some sort of flange between them? If they move, does the crank stop it?

This is what the discussion is about...

No idea what it is, though.

I agree with sunbeam, find the manual for the porta potti you have and that should explain it.I had a similar one with mine.

Yep, one came with my boat too, which is how I recognized it.

My first thought was the two do look like they were designed as hose fittings and rotating would allow for various installation options. Either that or it's an early flux capacitor.

If it's the Porta Potti dump fitting, the smaller tube could either be the vent, as already suggested, or a water input tube to add water to flush the tank while pumping it out. I'll check it out with Porta Potti on their website.

Sunbeam nailed it (as always).

OK, here's some info:

3C is the pump-out and vent connection, replaced by 3A for dumping

from the MacGregor's Sailors Website
Look down the page a few posts.

As always, C-Brats come through! When I bought Tortuga, it did not have a porta potti so I had no idea what this item was.

Thanks!

Hopefully you didn't place it in your mouth at some time and blow through it in an effort to determine what it was!......

Oh man, I gotta go.........

Joe's correct except the smaller tube is for you to suck on to get a siphon started. :disgust :cry

Be very careful with this procedure however! :crook
