What came first

I believe that the flat bottom Semi Dory 22' was the the first C Dory in the late 1970's. I have heard 1978, but I thought I saw one in 1977...but I could be off a few years by my memory.

I wonder why they desided to build the 19'. I'm trying to sell my 16' to get a 19' I've seen. I keep asking myself why not a 22' and have listed some reasons why not. I do like the 22' but, we try to get the boat that fits our needs. For me that might be the 19'. I wish I had gotten it in the first place.

Hi Steve,

How was your trip to Prince Whales island? I don't recall any posts about it.

What are the benefits of the 19 vs the 22? One of the main one might be the location you have to keep a boat. The 19 might fit where a 22 would not. I am not sure what the other benefits might be.

Steve-

The 19 was introduced after the Angler version of the 22 was out of production, and was basically more or less a replacement for the Angler for those more interested in a day-fisher than a Cruiser, not having a full cabin, including the larger dinette and galley. It also lacks the rear bulkhead, so is easier to fish out of, but lacks the foul weather protection and warming capability for sleeping. In short, it's a great day fisher, but not as good of a camper/cruiser.

They later introduced a 22 Sport version, which basically had the Cruiser cabin with bench seating, but no galley, and no bulkhead. This was intended as a day charter fishing boat, but few were sold, so it was discontinued.

More recently, the 22 Angler was brought back into the lineup as a viable/salable alternative.

DaNag (Bill) owned the first 19. The three feet cut off from the rear of the hull caused the boat to porpoise up and down, so trim tabs were then added as stanadard equipment. After a year or two, he switched over to a 22 Cruiser.

File Photo from Yesteryear (!), and, on right, last week!

Joe and Ruth have a 19, and they have built a Alaskan bulkhead on the end of the cabin, and the boat looks externally like a 22, except shorter, and w/o the second side windows.

Robbi is one of our most active 19 owners, skipper, and poster.

There are not as many used 19's around as 22's, since it is a newer model, and one can get an older 22 for the same or even less money than a 19.

Look carefully at all the C-Dory models and how they fit your needs, now and in the future. You only have to buy one of these boats once in your lifetime. No point in switching models down the road in 5 years or so!

The above history is off the top of my head and may not be 100% accurate, but is the best I can do w/o doing a Master's Degree style research project!

Good Luck!

Joe. :teeth

Joe,
Thanks for the informative reply. I believe you are the one who got me into this delema I am now in. I think you posted an add for a 19'er from the Redding News. 2005 C-Dory 19' for sale. I contacted the seller, drove from Tahoe to Cottenwood and checked out the boat. Now I am trying to sell Gizmo ( 16'er ) to put together the sale. The 19 is in as good a shape as Gizmo ( excellent ). Can't find anyone really interested in Gizmo. Running a two week add in Sacramento Bee. Posted on this sight, Craigs List and throw it out there when ever I can. I'm considering joining the Santa Catalina group and leaving Gizmo at the dealer in Ventura on a consignment basis for as long as it takes to sell her. They have 3 locations. I'm sailing on or about the 15th of Oct. from San Francisco to Mexico on the Baha ha ha. Might not be back until spring. If the 19 sells to someone elce, so be it. I'll loose out.

Steve - there is always another option - - - Add two feet to Gizmo.

It is just my personal opinion, but I think the 19 is too beamy and adding two feet to your boat
will give you a better handling and better proportioned boat. With the camper back on you
will have what seems like three times as much room as in the 16.
