Whale Attack

A whale attacked a boat just off the beach here in Santa Barbara yesterday.

A bizarre story just off our coast. A whale attacks a boat and sends two people to a local hospital. It happened late Wednesday afternoon just a half mile from Leadbetter Beach. The whale, possibly a grey whale, at least 30 feet long attacked the boat, not once, but three times. The whale destroyed the upper deck of a brand new bayliner named "blind girl." Shattered glass and chunks of whale cover the boat. The owner says when the whale attacked a second time, it knocked him out of his chair. The whale pinned the boat's passengers to the side of the bayliner. One person was rushed to the hospital with severe cuts and other injuries. One of the passengers says they were talking about whale watching moments before the whale hit them. The boat is totaled. The owner suffered minor injuries, and another passenger received cuts and 5 broken ribs. Ironically, the first boat to come to the rescue was a whale watching boat.

Holi Cannoli! Wonder if anyone will ever post pictures of the total-loss boat.. talk about a bad day on the water! Steve grew up in Oxnard (pronounced Oxxxxxxxxxnard like you're hawkin up a ...never mind)

Not surprise at all ,it had to happen soon or later! Imagine locals and tourist coming by the hundred surrounding your privacy two feet away from your windows or drive way , chasing you every time you get in your car to go some where, you probably would be charging soon or later, remember they are mammals and very smart one too . I have seen boats get right on top of them try to pet them like the where lab! The reason your not hearing the ole story about this incident is probably because you can get charge for violating your limits of approach. I personally shut my engines keep silence . I have seen many of them small and big , you should never have any problems if you keep all noises down and stay AWAY . Has for harassing that poor whale look who rescue this boat, whale watching vessel? Hope every body is okay the boat can be replace by a C-Dory!

Capt Scammon, a New England whaler from the 19th cent., spotted breeding whales in a lagoon in Baja (since called Scammons Lagoon). When he found the difficult entrance into the lagoon, the first day hunting whales was an easy day of hunting and killing. The second day, most of his whaleboats were destroyed by avenging whales.

Not surprised about the attack, if the whale watchers were harassing the whale -- just as DodgeRam suggests.

the guy that was attacked did not even know that they was a whale around until he got hit. Watch the news story at the link in the first post. The coast guard said that this is not the first time either. I laike how the news guys always end the story that the whale, bear , cougar etc..was just playing. hell maybe they are pissed off maybe the whale did not see the boat the first time. No way to till until the learn to talk.

I saw a picture on the news tonight...what a mess! Dat guy in the hospital bed is gettin some GOOD drugs, it looks like. Really makes you wonder what they were doing -- or the whale watchers were doing -- to tick it off like that...gotta remember it's their house, not ours!

wow, I just saw that on the news also...It looks like the passenger is going to be going through intensive marijuana thearpy...he remineded me of somebody off of a Cheech & Chong movie......it looks like whales don't like Baylinners
