Magnitude 5.6 quake hits off coast of Washington state:

Aug. 19, 2012 (Reuters) — A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck off the coast of the U.S. West Coast state of Washington on Sunday, the United States Geological Survey said today.

The depth was reported at 6.3 miles and the quake was located 190 miles west of Neah Bay, the USGS said. There was no immediate statement from the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii on the quake.

No Tsunami. Would that be because it was so deep? I was on the boat at the time, but my CPAP didn't even hiccup. Did hear about it on the news but no reported damage anywhere yet. Thanks for watching out for us here in the PNW. Good to see you are still around. Hope summer is treating you well.

C-dory owners have asked us to post about earthquakes and tsunamis that could threaten them, their boats, or shoreside property.

Certainly in Flagstaff you have no worries about tsunami, but in the PAC NW they do have concerns. Unless you plan to cruise up there, we suggest you simply skip those posts about waters distant from you.
 
Yup, It's family, the pub or the gathering. the chat is not always just about what is for breakfast. Roger's right, there is a forum called "general chat" ant it's here. Enjoy and share, we can all learn and grow in many directions.

And yes, It's OK to have a different opinion, sharing it via rule #1 (just be nice,) keeps this place what it is ---> the greatest boating forum on the net.

Having lived in the NW for 22 years, and having been through earthquakes, I full well understand the value of information concerning earthquakes and tsunamis. I suggest C-dory owners get such information elsewhere, like all other mariners. The Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska will issue approriate warnings that NOAA will pick up and broadcast via EAS capable marine VHF radios. Information will also be picked up by local authorities who will then decide whether to activate local alert systems which include the media and even the sirens on poles like those at Neah Bay. All this can happen far faster than over the three hour period between when you read a Reuters article and copy it here. The effects of an earthquake 190 miles off the coast would have already been felt.

I don't get the logic. However, I was not aware that you had been asked to do this by C-Dory owners. Thanks then for your efforts. I hope everyone concerned also knows about these other resources.

I've been a member of this group for over 8 years. Just my opinion but it seems like there are more and more postings that have little to do with our boats and their operations. Also there seem to be a lot of useful posts that start out informative but then degenerate into the non-informative. Again - just my opinion.

PS: Flagstaff is seismically active but I'll post that to another message board.
 
Bill is such a knowledgeable, fun guy who has been there and done that in a c dory some 25,000 miles and introduces aspects of cruising I knew nothing about, like how all that was formed that we enjoy cruising thru. Including grand canyon, lake Powell gulf Islands and all the rest Everything on this rock is earthquakes and volcanoes. It is interesting to many of us to see how it all came to be. And is still being formed. It ain't over yet! Volcanoes and daily quakes. This planets a pretty unstable geological mudball. Very interesting perspective from Bill. :thup George

I'm guilty of that!

I believe that there are at least two factors that contribute to the off-topic nature of some of the discussions on this boating site:

1. We (at least many of us) have become a close knit group of friends that feel quite comfortable extending the boundaries of discussions with each other, and

2. We've discussed some of these topics some many times with new members that we're bored to death with the latest incantations of the same old topics and yearn for something new and entertaining to come along and renew our interest.

The C-Brat site is the greats group of knowledgeable and caring folks I've found on the internet, and I feel more comfortable coming here and expressing myself that anywhere else, and I'm sure that many others of us old timers feel the same.

You are right about where we should be getting our earthquake and tsunami warning info from. Especially if we want it in a timely manner, and I think most of us do. As for me and my house, I enjoy Bill and El's take on the quake info. Often times, it has a informational slant that suits our PNW/boating fancy. They have experience and knowledge in both the geographical and the geological aspects and I for one am happy to see the the stone cold Reuters report, made meaningful through the Fearo translation.

By the way, I peaked into your album, and you have some nice work there, especially from Lake Powell. Thanks for sharing.
