wallas won't light

im runnin kerosene thank you all so much again :smiled

Diesel is allot cheaper but when i ran what mike left in the boat it was orange and jelled (common to old diesel and diesel that has frozen)

The little woman hates the diesel and we all know if momma aint happy aint nobody happy.

Hammerhead,
BTDT. Frustrated the heck out of me until I had a long talk with Mike at Scan Marine and let him do what the factory does not know about.
Works fine since.
DO agree with you about Yellow diesel. Treat it like Yellow snow.
Cannot comment on other fuels as I have not used them but I sure as hell would not run the Wallas without a detector and a window open.

Call me crazy but we run the wallas for heat all night all the time in the spring, fall, and winter. I always have a hatch cracked open because its to hot and susan is too cold. The wallas vents all co2 and burnt fuel out the side of the boat. I mean thats the reason for getting the wallas in the first place, to safely heat the boat.

If I had to do it again I think I would go with one of the central under the counter heating units and a propane stove for cooking. That way i could run ducts up to the berth and still have a cooking surface. hot air in the cabin does not find its way to the berth easly.

Speaking of owners manuals, ours for the model 125DU, circa 2002/3, states as follows:

“Fuel: Diesel Oil or Kerosene”

“*OLD FUEL - WATER IN FUEL Long storage can cause water condence (sic) which produces wax in oil. As this will till (sic) up fuel pumps and burner wicks, it is suggested that 3 – 5% Iso-Propyl alcohol is (sic) mixed with the fuel.

Use only Iso-Propyl Based (sic) carboretor (sic) spiritus (sic), - not Etyl/Methyl (sic) based qualities.”

The translation is a little rough, but the meaning is pretty clear. I’ve only used diesel once, and was dissatisfied with residual odor, and limited storage life. All other burns have been of K-1 kerosene, without the addition of alcohol, since I understand waxing to be a problem confined to diesel. Be that as it may, the owners manual clearly allows for kerosene. I’ve disassembled our unit, and cleaned away residue, while reusing the original wick, and saw nothing which would indicate that I’ve been getting anything other than a clean burn.

Have to agree that although I am now happy with the Wallas (after Mike worked his magic on it), if I was doing this again I would go with the system that Barry has on C-Cakes.
I agree that in principle, the Wallas is supposed to exhaust outside the cabin but I have first hand experience of it filling the cabin with white fumes, hence the ever open window and the detector!! That is exactly where Mike did some extra sealing in an area where the factory relies entirely on "good" tolerances.

Terraplane here.

I have been away, travel, music, etc. and have an appointment with my electric/ heat guy this week.

Wallas..to remind...started, and just stopped, now when you press the switch, nothing...
Where should he start..fuse? fuel? (fuel is KleanHeat)...
As i said earlier, it has worked perfectly up to now.

Tom:

There are two fuses. Pull the red 10 amp one at the battery. This will kill power to the unit. If this fuse is shot, replace once you're done under the unit. The other fuse is under the unit (2 amp, 1.5, or something in that neighborhood). There should be a spare in a single pronged clip which hangs down underneath the unit, labled, of all things "spare". If the fuse is shot, replace with the spare, and be sure to buy some extras. While in the neighborhood, check the power supply connection (red and black pair, about 10 ga) that comes in from the batteries through a single plastic connector, and the separate black ground which connects in the same area. Just push these two connections into place, in case they're loose. Nothing else required.

Then, replace the red 10 amp fuse by the battery.

If the fuel is reasonably fresh, restart the unit. Otherwise, chuck what's left, and replace with fresh.

That should get you going. If the problem repeats, there are some more things you can do. But, I suggest you start here.

Never neglect the obvious...is the battery dead or perhaps just too low
to operate the Wallace? (I once replaced a bildge pump because
the battery was dead. This was on a single I/O powered boat where
they always seem to put the pump under the engine, making replacement
a real chore.)

Anyhow, I'd check the voltage. Check it at the connector to the stove.

Also, I noticed those inline fuse holders don't seem to be as corrosion proof
as we might hope. I replaced all of ours.

Mike

The fuse holders have been a problem for me -- usually you can get away with taking the fuses out and reinstalling them several times to get a good contact.

I finally got mine to run for 30 hours straight. Life is good. (for the moment)

I concur on the fuse holders, which caused the problem that I had with our Wallas.

The fuses kept blowing due to corroded fuse holders. Once I replaced them all was fine.
