VHF Radio Stolen - Programed with MMSI Number

While my boat was being worked on, the VHF radio was stolen. It has since been replaced. What concerns me is that the radio was DSC equipped and I had registered for an MMSI number from Boat US and programmed the radio. Now that I have a new radio, what do I do? Do I cancel the old MMSI number and get a new one for the new radio or do I use the old MMSI number?

Related to this is, how do I prevent some crook from sending out DSC S.O.S. messages using my information? Would canceling my MMSI account on Boat US eliminate my account? (I asked this question on Boat US too).

Thanks,

I would notify Boat US and US Coast Guard. I believe that some radios can-not be reprogramed except by the manufactuer--so I would notify the manufactuer also.

If it was an FCC number it is asigned to the boat (and the ship's license). I suspect that Boat US numbers are also the same.

Sarge,

One could only hope he would send out a phony SOS. It would be a good way to locate the VHF and hopefully the new "owner".

No telling what the procedure would be in this case. Having dealt with the FCC in the past, I'd guess they will request that you change your name!

All the best,

Let's hope the low life pushes the pretty little red button and he gets his sorry a-- busted!

Sarge, where was the vessel at when the radio was stolen?

hell just pm the number to us in the sound and we can keep a eye out for him this year. as long as the radio is on it wil be sending.

A kid in folsom ca. was stealing radios out of planes. Well when he tossed a hand held radio in the closet it sent a sos out and the chopper ened up at his house with the police in tow. He had 42 radios and other gear in his room.

I think I would contact CG and US Boat and cancel the MMSI, (Or at least advise them that it is stolen) and then Publish it everywhere. Toms got a good idea, If the radio is out there, it will show up, I'd print off this thread, and the MMSI, and then report the finding to proper athorities in where ever I was at when I found it.

Sorry the VHF was stolen. Sure hope it was not someone at the site where you were having work done on the boat.

A similar story was going around Boeing a few years ago. It sounds too silly to be true, but criminals are none too bright sometimes.

Someone allegedly stole a life raft from one of the aircraft at Paine field, where the 747, 767 and 777 are made.

There were supposedly found when they deployed their new boat in Mukilteo, due to the emergency radio beacon that comes on when the unit inflates.

Get a new MMSI# for your new radio & cancel the old one if possible!  :beer

---Follow up---

Boat US provided the following information:

We do have a way of handling this and you need to contact our MMSI database administrator by calling 800-283-2883 and asking for extension 3561. ...she can walk you through the steps or take your number down and fix it in our records.
You will also need to re-register your new radio with a new number. The old number will remain, but without your personal information in the registration and a ''stolen" designation in our files.
Sorry for your trouble!

So the old MMSI number is still outstanding - it has my contact information and the message "Radio Stolen."

The new radio has a new MMSI #

Thanks for the follow up. Good info from Boat US. Any contact of saticfaction from the radio manufacture? If it has to go back to them for a new MMSI, there still may be hope for recovery.
