US/CANADA BORDER WILL STAY CLOSED UNTIL...

The reason countries are having an upsurge in their 2nd/3rd wave of COVID-19
are the sad human factors: lack of leadership, lack of dedicated perseverant
discipline to scientific principles.

In a deadly/incapcitating viral pandemic, flitting around (travel) is the worst
concept to endorse IF there is congregate agreement the virus pandemic must
be stopped, which it must before anything else can improve.

Wanting to go to bars, restaurants, see family/friends, travel, boat to places,
take road trips, go on vacation and do stuff all involves 'travel' undoubtably
mingling with others all which ignores science's recommendations. It is short
term dangerous self-serving thinking with consequent actions.

The truth is we are all in this pandemic together. Short term self-serving thinkers
simply represent rotten apples in the barrel that will adversely affect everybody
else. Waiting for or accepting the concept of "herd immunity" will be devastating.

I repeat and listen up. The virus cannot infect you if it cannot find you.

Wear a mask and keep over 6' distance near others. Avoid crowds especially
inside. Wash your hands frequently. Decrease your mobility and isolate. Be
part of the solution; not part of the problem.

alert ahead, totally unreliable analogy: This younger generation just does not know how to sacrifice. My parents generation WWII, mine Vietnam, younger folks those useful forays into the Middle East. We now are asked to bear the unbearable and wear masks, limit our contacts and restaurants (as opposed to eating c-rations). Prayers and tears are being shed for all of your suffering. Where is General Patton when we need him to gently give us courage?
 
"General Patton" and "gently" in the same sentence. Never thought I would ever see that. But a very interesting thought. And courage and guidance we need. And the fortitude to do what needs to be done. Stay home, wear masks, and keep your distance.

"Click it or ticket" worked, how about "Mask it or Casket" ?

Totally agree, unwillingness to sacrifice is a huge issue. And sacrifice is more than just doing one Starbucks a day.

I feel ya. It seems the younger set is unaware of war(s)* impact on people.
Sadly, many are asleep coasting on entitlement paid for by others.

The good news is we don't have to look 'out there' for what feels is missing today.
The truth is it is already inside us all. We just have to find and connect with it.

I've said it before, and I'll likely say it again......the percentage of folks wearing masks in public would go up like a rocket IF the masks mostly protected themselves instead of mostly protecting others. Sad, but true, I think.....it's in our DNA, and unfortunately the tendency is fueled by ignorance to boot.

I have stayed out of this mud hole...but if you get a proper mask (N95), fit and wear it properly it does protect the wearer.

N-95 fitted. 38 years of dealing with TB patients, (several thousand hours worth) and never had a positive TB test. Proof good enough for me that the masks work.

1. Perhaps you didn't notice my use of the word "mostly".

2. Perhaps it's different in Florida, but around here I almost never see masks of the N95 quality being worn; mostly (note), I see what appears to be cheap masks purchased at Costco in bulk (typically blue & white), or bandanas/scarves, or light weight neck gaiters.
 
You still can’t buy 3m n95 masks. They are only available to emergency workers and first responders. The 8511’s are no good. I’ve been an insulator for 20 years. You want the 8210 model. Can’t have facial hair and must properly fit. Most people don’t know how to nor would they want to. It’s difficult to breathe through when properly worn. Here in Pa most people only cover their mouth. It’s infuriating. One young guy told me he don’t believe in it. It’s a hoax. How foolish. I told him of the father and son in my family who died from it and we couldn’t have a proper funeral. There is no way to enforce any law over what we wear. It’s part of what makes America great. Also a double edged sword. We really need people to do the right thing. I’ve been locked up since mid January when we first heard of it because one of my kids is medically compromised. It’s been a tough year but we are doing our part. I hope everyone stays safe. Good luck.
 
The demise of Point Roberts is totally uncalled for. There is no reason that there is not a pasanger (at least) ferry running from PR to Bellingham on a regualr basis. There are a dozen whale watch boats that are out of work because of Covid19. The Victoria Clipper out of Seattle is not going to Victoria. Why are none of these assets diverted to Point Roberts?

Harvey how would a passenger ferry help the economy which is mostly dependent on Canadians?

Agree one hates to see this degree of economic failure. But there are thousands of small business which will never re-open.

The economy is not limited to Canadians. The locals need a way to get supplies, groceries, visit family, and there are family there who would have mainland family who would visit IF there was some access. School kids could take a boat to school, IF they had school. (Their usual school bus routes is up through Canada, across and down into the US for school and school activities. All that came to a screeching halt.) Point Roberts had an active marina with transcients going both north and south through there. Almost none now as supplies for marina and store are so limited.

Much of the Canadian traffic was to buy gas and groceries at prices that were not available in Canada.

Point Roberts is on its way to being a ghost town.

If things don't open up by next boating season, Those of us cruising in the San Juan Island should make it a point to go to Point Roberts, buy some fuel and lunch, and maybe even some tchotchkes. Maybe we should even consider a CBGT there?
 
Anyone got any recent knowledge (or even some educated guesses) about whether or not extended cruising will be viable in Canada next season?

I planned a 2 month cruise around Vancouver Island in 2020. Obviously that had to be canceled. My plan includes leaving July 1st from Anacortes returning on Sept 1st. Given the vaccine and all, perhaps the border will be open to boating by July 1st, but will all the marinas be open and supplies readily available on the east and west coasts of Vancouver Island that soon? Maybe I ought to plan for my cruise to happen in 2022?????
 
Great story. Americans and Canadians are brothers and sisters! Thru the years and a number of trips thru Canada, we have some wonderful friendships!
