Update to Wiper Switch / Washer Project

A coule of weeks ago I redesigned the frustrating single wiper switch arrangement and resplaced it with two independent DPDT switches. I did not have a chance to take photos of the washer hardware which is shown below.

The DPDT ON-OFF-MOMENTARY switches are configured so that 2 switches allow continuous or momentary operation of either wiper. The washer operates by holding both switches down to clean the windows.

Wiper Switches mounted on left side of console:

Here is the basic washer kit, about $20:

The Washer Nozzle is held securely (and shock mounted) in a cable outlet so that it can be adjusted:

I like the wipers much better after this mod.........

Nice installation and a great idea. Where did you get the "universal" windshield washer kit? Great idea to use the cable outlet for the nozle. Did the nozle come with the kit? Where did you mount the tank?

I was thinking of just a monetary contact switch to pump the liquid--rather than such a sophisticated system--but you did a great job!

Bob,

I found the universal washer kit on-line and it did include the nozzles. The kit came with an inexpensive push button switch but I wanted to eliminate the need for another switch as I am running out of space for switchgear on the console. Another advantage of this arrangement is that my 3 yr old grandson, who loves to push and tweak every switch and button on the boat, will not likely be able to run all of the washer fluid out as soon as he surely would as soon as he spied a new pushbutton.

I mounted the tank on the port side wall of the V berth where I already had installed a teak strip with with 5200. The tubing has a short run from the tank/pump to the cable access hole in the forward right corner the port shelf where it Tees into the the line connecting both washer nozzles.

Since Judy is usually in the boat when it's moving, she would request that I run the port wiper so she could see. It was a PITA to run "her" wiper when I was steering, drinking, navigating, etc. So I added a second switch right above the port wiper motor, so she can turn it off and on as she wants.

The photo shows the installation. All I had to do was find the power wire from the original switch and splice in a switch. On Journey On, the wire was red/green. I just cut it, spliced a pigtail to lengthen it (yellow wire,) and wired the switch right in series.

I also disconnected the power line from the original switch and then connected it to the power buss bar next to it through a fuse. This gave me an extra switch, but then the helmsman has to reach over to the new switch to turn the port wiper on or off.
I wanted the spare switch more than I minded the reach.
