two engines two fuel tanks

Looking at a boat with primary engine, and a kicker. The prim is on the big tank the kicker on a 6 gal tank sitting on the floor of the boat. The only reason I can think of for this is fuel contamination. Both are 4 stroke engines. Why not just add a Y valve of some type and run off the big tank.

Main reason for a kicker is either to troll or to get back in an when main is not running. To be truly a redundant system it should be separated and independent. Same reason we separate batteries make our wives learn to handle OUR boats.

We typically install a fuel tank quick connect fitting on the main fuel/water separator (they'e 1/4" NPT threads). So if you have (say) a Yamaha kicker then buy the Yamaha fitting that threads into a portable tank and thread it into the fuel/water separator instead.

Then you can connect the fuel line from the kicker to the main fuel/water separator or a portable tank as the situation demands.
